I think the iPad will be the Gaming Platform for "Everyone Else"

You know, for non-hardcore gamers. People who aren't addicted to their Xboxes and Playstations. Teen girls and grandparents, for example - people who aren't usually too excited by video games. Check out some demos of Solitaire etc. for iPad:

I think that gaming is going to be one of the huge, compelling reasons to buy an iPad. I mean, imagine Flight Control on an iPad! :awe: I can totally see my grandma firing up Bridge to play wireless with her friends. So I think giant touch games will be a real big seller on the iPad.

Discuss!

That solitaire game looks sweet. I really hope app devs take their time. Every time I see a cool app I'm tempted to get an iPad. The longer they work on it, the closer I get to 2nd generation hardware.

imo they just need to add a webcam and a stylus (pressure-sensitive a la wacom) to make it the "killer app" hardware. I can type notes on the iPad, but I can't write notes on it - what do I do for math class or art class where I need to make figures and doodles quickly? I definitely think it's going to become more than just a "big iTouch" in short order though.

I think it will be really neat to see what sort of multi-player games are developed...like board games or something like that for families/friends to do. I could see those being really popular.

I am pretty excited, the 3rd cant get here soon enough, just installed a tethering app on my HD2 in anticipation of tethering it to the new iPad.

heh, tethering one tablet to another...

Family Scrabble minus the plane tickets...that'd sell MILLIONS 😀 Especially with team chat!

I dunno, the iPad is one of those devices thats pretty polarizing, but I also feel pretty strongly that Apple has a paradigm changer coming out.

I agree, although I think it is going to take some time (maybe 2+ versions) before people realize the kind of hit they have on their hands.

streetfighter works good on my kid's iphone. so does all the other pre-school games.

air video for streaming from NAS - custom springboard to keep the 3yr old out of cydia 🙂

airplane mode and the thing lasts quite a long time on battery.

Gaming platform for "Everyone Else" is Wii, iPad is another device you can play Solitaire on, not a paradigm shift. I had solitaire on my iPaq 10 years ago.
Plus Android Tablets are going to have 3D accelerated Flash so you can play all the flash games (Farmville, Poker, Chess, etc) online and not wait for someone to port them to iPad.

We'll see about gaming. I would have pre-ordered if it was an atom with 9400M graphics. Then you could do some pretty crazy stuff with full featured rendering.

Flash CS5 content will play on an iPad, Adobe is doing something with Action Script to make Flash made in CS5 to support iPhones. Most flash games worth a damn will get updated to CS5 + iPhones already have the best selection of games on a portable device IMHO. Field Runner alone will make the iPad kick ass. I have about 30 games on my iPhone and love most of them. I'd say Flash CS5 + App Store = best portable gaming platform.

How does that make sense though, netbooks are horrible game platforms.
In any case apples proven it knows how to cram 3d/gaming into things like the iphone. So i don't doubt them here.

plus you can already buy the cr@ppy archos

no ones going to be making games for those😉

Maybe, we'll see. I'd rather be able to play any flash game I want, on any website, than just be able to play Apple approved Flash games. In either case, I don't think tablets are going to be gaming platforms for everyone else. Plus Apple does not have a HDMI output which some of the other tablets will have. So you can't even plug your TV in and use the device as a console.

flash and silverlight will cross compile (like titanium) to objective C - then you can submit your app and get approved.

real simple folks. go try to use flash game on a touch pc - right now - you'll see the fundemental mistake (silverlight has addressed this).

Although I think the iPad will be successful, I do not think that gaming will be a big deal on it. The iPhone and it's competitors is really where the next big market for gaming. Weak graphics are holding it back for the time being but that will change.

iPad would be a virtually perfect mobile platform for full-size strategy and adventure games with no fast input requirements. It's sad that it seems to mostly get $1-5 action games with terrible controls and "strategy" games for retards.

Or you could just buy another tablet and have Flash work.

you know if i could plug a game pad into this thing (hello USB port) and play flash games/emulators on it, it would be worth its weight in gold.

i cant so its crap

I got the ipad now and I have to say, it sucks for gaming. The lack of buttons is horrible and the graphics suck.

What do the graphics suck in comparison to? I mean, most of the time a PC's graphics will outdo the console version of the same game. And again, if they make that game for the handhelds, it will again suffer.

I am just making sure that your expectations are actually correct.

The games for the iPhone are already fairly good, and run pretty well. I'd imagine that with the more powerful CPU and hopefully GPU, games for the iPad will be even better.
