Your filter changes should be custom tailored to your vehicle's service duty and environment instead of a generic mileage or time interval.

yep one year maybe pushing it for a oil change, under these driving conditions, time counts too, not just miles

like Eli said oil can get diluted, even turn acidic over time

Mitsubishi, Hyundai, and Kia automatic transmissions take a special fluid and only those dealerships have it.

So the dealership will change the fluid for free then? Because if they specify that you can only use their lubricants and they don't make them available anywhere else, they are legally required to provide them free of charge.

Go look up what the specs are for the fluid in those transmissions. I guarantee that I can find an ATF at the local auto parts store that will meet them.

Saying that only the dealers for those cars have the appropriate fluid is complete and utter BS.

No BS at all. Read some Hyundai forums like here: http://www.elantraclub.com/for...ex.php?showtopic=10169

Here is a good quote from a guy who works at a Kia dealership:

"Get the SP-III fluid from your dealer. It's the only way to know for sure you are getting the right fluid. The Hyundai/KIA/Mitsu transmission has rubber clutch packs that melt when any other kind of fluid, other than the SP-III, is put into the trans.
In the last month I have seen 8 auto transmissions being replaced at the KIA dealership I work at all due to the wrong fluid, useualy Dextron III, that is put into the trans by a quicklube. Then they had to pay $1700 to replace the trans."

Another guy at a different dealership:

"DO NOT USE ANYTHING OTHER THAN SP-III FLUID!!!!!!!!!!

Chrysler ATF+III, Dexron, Mercon, Type F, or any other fluid melts the insides of the transmission. In the past 5-6 months, I've replaced 5 Hyundai auto transmissions because the owners put something other than SP-III fluid in the trans."

Maybe you can find an ATF at a auto parts store that says it's SP-III compatible, but I don't know if I'd trust it. The track record of people not having the work done at the dealerships is pretty bad.

If they do not have specs published and there are no third-party fluids that meet the specs, they are required by FEDERAL law to supply the fluid free of charge to owners of these cars. It's that simple. If the fluid ain't free, they're either breaking Federal law, or there are third-party alternatives out there that will fully meet all specs and will work perfectly.

ANY automatic transmission will fail from using the wrong fluid. That doesn't mean you can only get it from the dealership. The issue is that owners are allowing third-party shops to put in non SP-III fluid. No different than a shop putting Dexron (note the lack of a "t" in the word) in a transmission that's supposed to use Mercon. As long as the owner makes sure than an SP-III compatible fluid is used, it will work fine. Quick lube shops just don't check to make sure they're using the right fluid all the time.

I say again:

Claiming that you can only get the fluid from the dealership is COMPLETE BS.

It is illegal to require manufacturer specific maintenance materials in order to uphold a warranty.

Not technically. It's legal to require them, just illegal to charge for them if they're required. ;)

WTF, rubber? Slushboxes suck. Rubber is for seals and vibration isolators, not force transmission.
