I think that chip manufacturers should let ATOT name their upcoming chips

IronWing

No Lifer
Kaby Lake? Bristol Ridge? We can do better than that. It would take care of Intel's bizarre Core i357 naming scheme where you have to go to the third or fourth digit to figure out if the chip is circa 2010 or 2017.

You mean something like: iAB-C-D
A = Chip Generation
B = Product Segment (such as the i3, i5, i7)
C = Base Clock Speed in MHz
D = Power

So I could buy a i77-5000-91W for a 7th generation, top segment, 5.0 GHz Kaby Lake using 91W TDP (hypothetical processor). Rather than a i6789K (also hypothetical naming).

That one. That other one. The one that doesn't suck. The one that sucks from that other company. Etc.

Or: Andrew, Andrea, Billy, Bobbie, Charles, Clarissa, Dan, Denise, etc.

Gen 1...Air Conditioner
Gen 1.2...Mouse (because it came out of Air Conditioner

Gen 3...Bulk Beef
Gen 3.2...PROFIT!

Close. But i3/i5/i7 is still confusing. On the other hand, since core counts are always even with Intel, we could come close: i, followed by "Chip Generation", followed by core count, plus one if hyper-threading is enabled. So I would still have an i63. But i5's would become iX4's. Current i7's would be iX5's. And Intel would have to produce a mainstream 6-core chip to make an iX7. 🙂

Edit: Does Base clock speed make sense for C? I'd go with maximum turbo on all cores simultaneously, then let the wattage show you how much it throttles.

Like hurricanes?

Name them after members here.

I highly doubt I'd every see a Mong Grel chip i my lifetime, but I never thought I would ever see a Mong Grel in WOW either.

That was a WTF moment, when I logged in there and saw the little twits attacking me at the time, the first day I logged in, shortly after release 🙂

Chippy McChipface?

I'm down on that one.

Name them after stars or use Latin names to really dorkify the shit. Like, Canis7, Ursa8, Rigel9, Adria10, Antony11, Clementius12, Dominicus13, HADRIAN14, etc, etc.

Laptop CPUs could use dwarf star names. HEHE
