I think something may have happened to my kid:(

Tio lives in Java, Indonesia🙁

He is the child that I sponsor using Christian Childrens Fund. 🙁

I am afraid to research on where exactly everything took place and what areas where hit hard.

I know I can call them up and stuff, but can one of you look it up and see how bad the area around Java was hit if at all?

Thanks🙁

I'm thinking the ground shook pretty nasty and some buildings fell over. Java is pretty decently inland.

I have a friend who's from Bandung, and is currently visiting family there. I emailed her as soon as I heard about the incident, but haven't heard back from her yet, and I'm a little worried...I hope she's OK 🙁

Hope Tio is ok too 🙁

I feel for you and sincerely hope that all is well. On the positive side it is likely that Java escaped the majority of the damage because of its position relative to the epicentre of the quake. I've highlighted the rough epicentre of the quake in the image below, Java is to the south and west of the epicentre protected by a large extent by Sumatra.

Note this is not an expert opinion, however the majority of the disaster does seem to be on Sumatra, Thailand and in India.

Java was not hit. it's pretty far away from where the earthquake took place.

if you look at the top left corner of the map that says 'Banda Aceh', that's supposed to be around the area that is affected by the tsunami.

saxguy: actually it's not the distance that matters as much as the fact that Java is sheltered from the Tsunami by the island of Sumatra. Some of the worst hit areas are Sri Lanka and India which are about as far if not further away. However they were in direct line of sight from the Tsunami's point of view.

Tsunamis/Tidal waves travel at hundreds of miles per hour in the open ocean and can cross huge expanses of open water.

Jakarta, on the north-western coast of Java was not affected. As mentioned above, areas affected were in the western coast of Aceh province (tip of Sumatra). I have not heard about casualties on the western coast of lower provinces (from North Sumatra to Lampung).

I am not sure about the tsunami effect on the western coast of west Java. Goosemaster, if Tio lives inland in Java, s/he should ok.

It's a terrible calamity. I hope Tio is OK.

you made a good point, but from this map you can see that Sri Lanka and India is a lot closer to the epicentrum of the earthquake (which supposed to be right in the middle of that map) than Java is (which does not even get shown, it's over at the bottom right corner of the map).
