There was a news story this morning about a rash of car breakins in some various cities in SE MI. Apparently some people are going up and down streets looking to steal stuff out of unlocked cars parked on the street. Lots of people saying they feel 'unsafe' or 'violated'. One guy said "Its sad that you can't leave your car unlocked on the street anymore"

Dude - you live next to one of the worst crime areas in the country, this shouldn't be a surprise. I guess its a good sign that things are good enough this makes the news. When I lived in that city and they just smashed my GF's and a bunch of other car windows to steal stuff and that wasn't bad enough at the time to make the news. Many of these people live a short drive or even a short walk from the worst crime areas in MI. Yeah you should lock your freakin car doors.

I thought this thread would be about drivers who hang in the left lane until they are within a hundred yards of their exit and then careen across the lanes to exit, leaving a wake of slamming brakes.

Even peaceful suburbia here you have to lock up. There's still lowlifes looking to break in for drug money. And it's not like there are dealers on the street corners...

We make sure ours are in the garage too. The only time we have left them out is when the spring broke and we were waiting for repairs and when the garage was full of new kitchen cabinets.

People do that around here do that on purpose. "If I am driving I belong in the left lane for as long as possible"

Or the driver who is entering the highway and the right lane is clear for miles but he has to merge 3 lanes over no matter what cutting you off leaving a wake of slamming brakes.

Oh and always lock your door and keep a key under the matt. No one will ever find it.

I would expect that in SW Michigan (Near the hellhole of Indiana), but SE Michigan is a good 3 or 4 hours from Gary.

SE Michigan, aka The Detroit Metro Area.

I've always lived in fairly nice areas - where I knew my neighbors left homes unlocked, cars unlocked, keys under welcome mats, etc. Nobody in my family was ever stupid enough to fall for the Andy Griffith Show bullshit. Lock up your shit if you want it to be there in the morning.

I hear similar stories in my neighborhood.

"Someone stole my $250 pair of head phones."
"$400 in cash, gone"
"My work laptop and iPad!"

Look, we live in a pretty well-off neighborhood, which if anything makes it more of a target. Don't leave shit in your car that's parked outside, and lock the damn door.

I still can't figure out why someone had $400 in cash just sitting in their car. Dolt.

After 2 car break-ins ( the vehicle was in an underground garage) where the shit heads broke the window to get in and took nothing ,as there was nothing, I now leave nothing of value and the windows conspicuously open. If per chance the power that be wants things in the trunk for convenience then I do button her up tight as possible but that occurs infrequently.

I was attempting tongue in cheek humor. I have been to Detroit several times (usually we go through there to go into Canada), though haven't spent any time there recently.
Was trying to insult Gary Indiana by comparing it to Detroit, and saying that Detroit is favorable to Gary.

When Gary had money because of all of it's industry, it was known as the armpit of the Midwest. Now that they are broke, it's only worse.

Ah.

I always assumed the "Armpit" thing was because of the smell.

What was explained to me was Armpit was indeed because of the smell from teh refineries, and also because it's directly south of lake Michigan ... so on a map, it kinda looks like it's below the "shoulder" of the midwest...

Why would you leave stuff worth taking in your car in the first place?! I drove a convertible for years living in the city, always left the top down just so no one would slice it open... The only bad thing to ever happen was while I was driving. I was sitting at a light waiting for it to turn green, and some hooker jumped right over the door and into the passenger seat uninvited...
I said to...(it?) You ain't pretty woman and I'm not going to be having to pay for it anytime soon... although if you were actually Richard Gere, I might reconsider that last statement.

No idea. We only got a few CDs and some change for parking stolen when they were into smashing windows bit like JM Aggie said some people were out some nice stuff
