I think our refrigerator finally died..

I am hoping its just a bad thermostat or low refrigerant, but it only made one batch of ice in a 24 hour span and the frozen food is starting to thaw a bit and the refrigerator side isnt as cold as it used to be.

I kinda hope it is dead so we can get a new one.. Our current one smells like vinegar in the ice maker area..No amount of cleaning can get rid of the smell.. It has thru the door ice and water also but is only 22 cubic feet.

If the repairman says we need a new one, We will get it at sears.

Any suggestions as to which model? I'd like to keep it under 1500 if possible.

FYI, I already used the shop vac and the air compressor to blow off the coils.. They were filthy.
Also did some other general cleaning up on it..

The compressor always seems to be running which is not a good sign. I'd think that if the thermostat was bad, we'd always have frozen food, so it sounds like a low refrigerant problem to me.

You have a refrigerant leak. We had one on our old fridge. Bluish stain on the floor behind the fridge. We have a Kitchen Aid now (rebadged Whirlpool). I think it was under $800 for a 23cu ft. top freezer unit. Nice fridge🙂

I agree, sounds like a refrigerant leak, but.. nothing on the floor.. i thought I would see some telltale signs of oil or something, but nada..

Wierd.

If you think you NEED to spend $1500 on a refrigerator....well, theres a problem. You should be able to find one MUCH cheaper, around $500 or so. My dad just bought a scratch and dent one for like $250.

Well, yeah, the Mrs. and I are kind of spoiled like that. I dont want to spend that much by any means, but we do have certain criteria that needs to be met.

side by side
ice and water through the door
at least 21 cubic feet.

Aside from that, we are easy.

I know nothing about refridgerators (even the spelling) to offer decent advice.

I can only offer words of condolences on your loss 🙂

It could be the defrost timer (as in always in defrost mode).

If yours is more than, say, 10 years old, a new one will save you lots of $$ on the electricity bill 🙂

I'd get a Whirlpool 25cf side by side, if you like side by sides.

better start eating!
grubfest for christmas!
what is defrosting?
can't refreeze most things without bad consequinses

Well, its cold enough in the garage to keep everything nice and cold. We also have a large upright freezer in the garage we can put all frozen foods in.

There is a turkey defrosting in the refrigerator for tomorrow, so that shouldnt be a problem either. Both sides are cold, just not as cold as it should be i dont think.

I am going to move all the frozen stuff over except for a can of OJ and see what happens. If the OJ is still unfrozen in the morning, then I know I have a problem. Stuff in the refrigerator should be cold enough, but i will check it a couple times throughout the nite.

My fridge broke down once and it turned out to be the freezer fan in the back of the freezer that blows cold air thru the duct.

Started talking to my neighbor and found out he used to be an appliance repairman.

He looked at it, took some measurements with his multimeter, and ascertained that the heaters in the freezer unit that control the defrost cycle are shot.

We are going to go pick up some units tomorrow wholesale and fix it right up. My coils were totally frozen over with ice chunks.

The Mrs and I had picked out a real nice black unit to go in our kitchen and everything.. oh well.. money saved is money towards computer stuff..
