I'd rather have a kid with good social skills than a smart kid. smart != social skills. I'm not bashing you in any way, just my opinion. He will be so much ahead of the other kids in his age and I don't know if that's a good thing.

seriously, you need to start your kid on a musical instrument, the sooner the better(it will blow his mind). also start on spanish or french or somethin close to english as soon as you can(as soon as he has a firmer grasp on english). him knowing how to type to his mom at 3 is amazing.

but ya seriously, make sure he gets into music, if he can already understand language this well, especially this early in life, he should do good in the music world. and studieds have found that people who know more then one language are in general faster thinkers at everything. and i would really start him on piano and not another instrument because you get the widest range of keys in front him with a more direct approach then other musical instruments(not to mention how many girls hes gonna impress later if he gets good)
Piano's good.

I'm sure your son is probably very bright, and the following story has nothing to do with him other than the fact that it is the first thing that came to mind when reading your post.

When I used to work in the Sears electronics department during college, I once had a woman and her adult son talk to me about his great accomplishments in life. They included beating Mario 3, beating Metroid, getting the family high score on this or that game, etc. The funny but pathetic part is this woman was literally beaming with pride as she went on and on about her little basement dweller.

My son is 3.5 now. He plays some video games and computer games pretty well. Though nothing that requires a lot of skill. He certainly wouldn't do very well at Metroid Prime. He used to be pretty good at Animal Crossing and Super Monkey Ball 2 though (he could do the first 2 worlds by himself, but world 3 was too hard for him - and me too sometimes, heh), but quit playing those. He plays Harry Potter Quidditch World Cup a lot now. He's pretty good at the computer, he can load stuff, knows how to shut down the computer, etc. He plus around in Trillian but can't type or anything. He just likes spamming people with random letters or sending them various smiley faces.

better build a nice basement for him so when he graduates college he can live with you until he is 43.

As opposed to being dumb AND having no social skills like you.

I started to teach myself BBC basic (on a BBC microcomputer) at age 6. First program I wrote was a random triangle generator... I spent 1/2hr watching it run. Then threw in the "sound" envelope instructions, but had a knock on effect with the randon polygon drawing :( Crappy BBCs...

He's definately smart, but do bare in mind that his mind is fresh and uncluttered with education at the moment, hence he'll find it easier to break into new things. And most of all, make sure he's not socially inept. Being socially inept in the future will have a MASSIVE knock on effect with his self-esteem. I should know, I see friends who are bright but socially inept at a young age, suffer now.

Edit: additions.

You're 4 years old and could go to school and are UBER smart, yet you have to play around with the kids the same age, you think that makes you happy? The older kids don't accept you because you're only 4 years old. BTW, I didn't wanted to bash him, I was just thinking out loud. Now STFU already.

Go "/" myself? I'm sure you're MUCH smarter than me.

Agreed, I started playing music at a very early age. Music can further expand someone's mind. Like Wah said, studies show it to be true!

wow. congrats on your little prodigy.
don't force him to do any particular thing, introduce him to everything (everything good obviously, such as music and reading, etc) and let him do what he likes the most.

i can read in my first language since i was about 3.5, but not write and obviously not typing in AIM (it was typewriters back in 1975..heheh.). i can speak and understand simple english words (not my first language) when i was about 4-5.

i was regarded as extremely smart compared to my peers back then, until i hit my teenage years when i started to taper off until finally i became just another, regular geek :)
