Hello all,

I'm running an Athlon XP 1900+ (Palamino) with a Shuttle AK32A motherboard.

My processor temperature is reaching 138 degrees farenheight constantly, and it's driving me buggy.

My Heatsink/fan is rated for a 3000+, and the heatsink is all copper.

Considering that my case temp stays around 85 degrees farenheight, a friend suggested that my processor might be cracked... would something like that cause this problem? Another friend of mine said something about voltage, does that hold any weight? This is driving me insane.

Any ideas? Solutions? Anything?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

58.8C CPU
29.4C Case

those aren't that bad .. sorry had to adjust for C info. Can't figure out what that is in F.

I'll start with the obvious questions- how is your case ventilation? Are you using thermal compound of some kind? Do you have any Intake or exhaust fans?

85F for the case isn't bad but since the cpu is running warm I would look at the HS and make sure it is seated flat on the cpu. It is fairly easy to mistakenly mount the HS too far forward on the cpu so part of the HS rides up the ridge of the socket where the hold down lever is located. When this happens the HS will not fully cover the cpu and your temps will shoot up.

My case ventilation is decent, I'm happy with the general temp, save for the processor.

I usually use arctic silver; however, this heatsink/fan already had pre-applied thermal paste on it. Should I clean it off and use arctic silver?

By the way, besides the CPU fan, I have two case fans: one for intake and one for out take, both of them are 80mm. It's a mid tower case.

Just yesterday, I ordered a new Antec full tower that has room for four case fans, but I don't think case fans are the problem.

I'm running a 2500 Barton with a Volcano 9 by TT. I also have some high temps but they are within range. Anything under 60 degrees C is acceptable. I'll be going to an SLK arrangement soon, I think the SLK 900 or 900a are recommended for our setup. If you want really cool, you can always go with a water cooled rig or vapochill.

Palominos run hot as it is, I wouldn't expect a much lower temp from the CPU unless you upgrade the heatsink\fan. Try blowing the dust out of the heatsink and see what that does for your temps. Got me 2C lower :).

what is your heatsink? rating doesn't mean much, just means it works at a minimum:)

palos are hot, i had a 2000+ palo.

that being said, if it doesn't crash, its fine. palos aren't worth anything anymore.

The full tower should help some, but if you keep the mid-tower case, how is it arranged? Is the PSU mounted horizontally above the Mobo like most (sane) cases, or vertically to the side so it sits right in front of the HSF like my (stupid, insane, POS) case?

if its the latter, try cutting a hole right above the HSF and putting an 80mm fan above it. I managed to lower my CPU Temp by 5C just by doing that. i'm running 53/127 right now on my 1800 (palomino), but thats with the aforementioned hole and a 7000RPM fan (*shudder*). before I had a 4500RPM fan and was running more along the lines of 60 to 65 C. My case temp is, btw, only 31/87, and i think its about 80 in my room right now.

As a side note, don't EVER buy the InWin A500 or any other similar case if you're using an Athlon processor, I've got about 70mm clearance for my HSF, which means i can't use most of the more powerful coolers and it means my fan is pulling air right off my power supply too. (Actually, i just got an Antec PSU w/a big fan right there, so i've got two fans trying to pull air out of a space about 1mm in width, is a wonder nothings burned up yet...)
