At some point in the last couple of days I think the GPU in my laptop has been fried. The computer in question is a Clevo w230ST with an nvidia 765M GTX.

I tried to play a game earlier today (Civ 5) and noticed it was really choppy. I then went looking for a culprit and found that the 765M wasn't showing up in device manger and the game was running on the integrated GPU, hence the choppiness. I decided to uninstall all the nvidia drivers and reinstall. Unfortunately the drivers don't pick up the GPU. Next stop I took a look in the BIOS. To my dismay the GPU wasn't showing up there either.

From what I have read on the net if it isn't showing up in the BIOS then that is a bad sign. Does anyone have any tips/tricks/checks I can perform to confirm the dead GPU? I'll probably open it up tomorrow to check for any physical damage but it is getting late and I've had enough.

Unfortunately it is out of warranty though it was purchased in Australia and I may have some rights under the ACCC. So on a side question do any Australians have any experience with an ACCC claim?

Thanks in advance.

If the 765M is an MXModule then you might be able to refit it into the slot. It might've come out loose. I'm not sure what the ACCC can do for you since your warranty's over and the product itself wasn't faulty when bought nor did the brand/manufacturer make any claims like "5 years minimum use before any component dies".

Opened up the laptop this morning to take a look. Couldn't see anything obviously wrong like scorch marks. But I did notice that the CMOS battery had come slightly loose. I reseated the battery and booted the computer up. Went into BIOS and the GPU had reappeared, also in Device Manager. Could a loose battery have cause the GPU to stop functioning? Or is it just lucky?

after a few years, laptops should be opened up and cleaned.
The dust which gets accumulated inside might cause issues !
