I think my HDD is dead :(

When I booted up this morning it said it was SMART capable but wasn't responding to the command. It's my primary slave and I use it to store music files and such. My OS is on my master. Windows would not boot up. I took out the slave and windows booted up fine. Is it dead? Can I fix it? How can I check? I am not running RAID. It's a Maxtor 120GB ATA Diamondmax Plus.

Ok. Windows does boot up it just takes about an extra minute now. The HDD is making a clicking noise and I can still access the files in it.

you better be backing stuff up, unless of course you are one of the few that backs up on a routine basis. And looking for the best price on a replacement drive. The hours your drive has to live are numbered.

Yeah, I figured it was something like that. I've taken it out for now. Maxtor has a nice replacement policy so after my new Maxtor 300GB 7200RPM 16MB cache mmmmmmm arrives, I'll be backing it up and sending the old one to be replaced. Thanks!
