so basically my comp crapped out after running tests in dxdiag. after testing everything, it started to operate very sluggishly, then explore.exe died out causing me to do a reboot. k now it says boot set up incorrect blah blah blah insert media boot disk yada yada, so i reset cmos and now it points out the message primary master hard disk error after the hard drive itself made some foreign noise like something mechanical got very got mad and decided to go on strike, guess it was all the pr0n. so basically my 160gig western digital has reached it's time? i would try my externals but i think i have to reformat to run an operating system on it, or can i bypass the reformatting and make a partition? so all my pr0n is now gone, i didnt do my monthly back-up for the past year..so i can safely confirm this thing is fubar? rig in sig.

Do you have another computer? If you do, you could download and create a diag CD to diagnose your hard drive. Western Digital has a diagnostic boot CD program on their website. If you wanted to put one of your externals in, there would be no reason to reformat it... just install windows right on it (Make sure that it does not already have a windows folder). If you are trying to boot strait off an external USB drive that could be a little tougher though. Your motherboard would have to support it.

P.S. Even if you are able to recover your hard drive, trash it after you get the info you need. Hard drives that make strange noises are a sure sign of impending failure.

Good luck
