Ok heres my comp:
Gigabyte Ga-7VRXP rev2.0
Atlon XP 1800+
256 Samsung 2700 DDR ram
Seagate 60 gig Barracuda
Gainward Geforce Ti4200
(i use the fan that came with my CPU)

Ok I usually just play games and stuff and when i do my comp can go to up to 59 degrees!! I get extremely paranoid so i just shut it down. Now im scared to play games cuz I'm scared my cpu will fry. Now i need a good recommendation on what fan I should buy for my CPU... I was thinking a Volcano 7? or a Volcano 9? well i dunno. I'm a noob when it comes to fans.. Oh and one thing I remember my friend not being able to take out an AMD athlon Fan because it was extremly hard. Like if it were stuck or sumthing. Is there a way to take out my original fan without having this problem? Thanks!!!

The 7VRXP revision 2.0 is the second consumer-level motherboard to read directly from the CPU's onboard temperature diode. 59C is just fine. If that reading gets over 70-75C then you better start worrying... :D

For the record, if you do want to get some deluxe cooling, one setup to consider is a Thermalright AX-7 with a mid-output 80mm fan, or a YS Tech adjustable-rpm fan (up to 40cfm). That combo would set you back about $40 shipped... but then again, that's almost half the price of the CPU itself. If you do get one, make sure to get some Arctic Silver 3 thermal compound too... it will help lower your temperatures as well.

80mm high cfm fans are the way to go...they have lower rpm to produce same cfm and often are very quiet...

My ystech fan at highest 3700rpm (45+cfm) is not audible over 2 case and 1 PS fan with side buttoned up...

A screwdriver should be helpful to push the clip down & then remove the HSF. Just be careful not to slip the screwdriver & scratch the mobo. Then clean off those sed thermal pad w/ alcohol or nail polish remover. U should be fine.

Hmm, I don't know about the 70-75C. From my experience, hitting hi 50's is usually not good for an XP. Have you noticed any instability in your PC (i.e. games crashing out to the desktop, or blue screens, or system reboots) if not, then it's a good sign. I would reccomend a new Heat Sink Fan, or perhapse checking the installation of your current one. I have heard several problems recently of heatsinks being installed backwards. Usually the screw driver notch on a HSF (above the retaining clip) should be closer to the outer edge of the motherboard (the other side should also have retaining clip holes, but now screw driver notch.

Anyhow if you wan a decent cooler, then go for the Volcano 7+ (not the Volcano 7 they are different HSF). Its an all copper cooler (the Volcano 7 is a painted aluminum Heatsink) that usually performs well. Anyhow good luck.

my 1900 temps are read from a thermister in the socket, so i'll assume that the actual diode temp is higher than that. With that said, on a hot summer day (ambient temp > 80deg F) my temps read 52-55deg. I have absolutely no instability problems, not even after hours of gaming.

I say your temps are fine

My temps are at 59C as well. It's been there since like....I first got it a year ago. Haven't checked temps after playing Warcraft 3 for hours, though. Probably even hotter after that.

My temps hit a level around that too. Part of it is because my room gets very hot. Sometimes my ambient case temp hits nearly 40C. That has a lot to do with it. None the less, I can still overclock my CPU to 1275MHz from 1000MHz with the default voltage.

Get a Vantec Stealth fan - those things move a good amount of air and they are super quiet. Or try a Panaflo - those are good too.

My 1800+ is being read at 39c right now  After playing GTA3 it reads at 42c. All this on PC Alert III, I have a feeling it's not reading it right. I'm not OCing, and using this cheap 6.99 HSF from SVC! And not even Arctic Silver, the cheap stuff that came with the HSF.

Dude, I'm using the EXACT same HSF combo as you and my XP 1600+ is hitting 60C+. :| WTF?! I know it is making good contact because the heatsink is hotter than hell. I've tried changing the fan from blowing to sucking with very little difference. :|

I don't know what the deal is, it's now at 38c, and I just got done playing some MOH:AA...It read that in the BIOS as well, so it couldn't just be the program, so it must be right. I guess I'm just lucky or something ;)

I have a K7S5A. If my temp readings are inaccurate they are reading lower than they really are because like I said, it will hard lock at just over 60C. :( And yes, it does suck. :(

(

That might be one reason, I had a K7S5A before with my 1.33 t-bird and temps were around 50-55c. I switched to an MSI kt3 ultra2 and the xp1800 and my temps are steady around 40c. And before I used the stock AMD fan.
