I found a link to the laptop, the cheapest configuration is $599 from the website.

Minimum config on the web site is 512MB ram. Looks like the VIA vid chip is currently "sharing" ~128meg of that.

Back in the day, Sager had a niche carved out for themselves putting out big, hot, heavy notebooks using desktop CPU's when there was at least some kind of arguable speed and capablity advantage to using them.

So... they're still in business. Hmmm, how 'bout that? 😉

Or maybe 512MB with 128MB dedicated to the integrated graphics, although that would be a lot for the integrated.

Not really. Not at all. In fact, it's usually the default config.

The way I see it she either:

A) Doesn't know jack about computers and got swindled from whoever she bought it from, thinking it was worth $800.00.

or

B) She was given $800 from your grandparents to buy them a laptop... she bought the cheapest POS she could find knowning your grandparents wouldn't know any better.... and kept the other $600 for herself.

My guess is "B". I can see a woman doing that since they don't usually give a crap about electronics anyway. A man probably would have been more enthusiastic about buying a nice new gadget, and likely would have gotten the best thing the $800 would buy him.

/flame on 😀

Has way better specs and much cheaper. What do you guys think?

wait, your aunt bought it but your grandparents bought it? 😕

OP - if it's a Sager notebook, why would you direct us to HP's website?

If you read the post, you'll note that he's saying the laptop he's *trying* to link to is better and cheaper.

i've never heard of the brand.

Sagers are good laptops. I have one from about 3-4 years ago that has a 15.4" screen that does 1920x1200.

Same here.

Eyestrain 🙁

It's irrelevant that it's a good brand. It makes no sense to pay 3x what it's worth when an HP that may even be made by Sager is much more powerful and current.

Are you saying that your aunt took $800 and gave your grandparents a computer that cost less than $800? If so, then she may have "ripped them off". (Remember "cost less" is different than "worth less", especially in analyzing your aunts actions.)

On the other hand, if she bought the computer for the $800 they gave her, then she did not "rip them off". She probably just did not know that she could get a better computer for less than the $800 she spent. (BTW, if you are the computer expert in the family, why didn't your grandparents or aunt come to you when it came time to pick a computer?)

Unless this person has a history of "ripping people off" why would you assume that this was malice & not simply a lack of knowledge?

Not getting the best possible deal is not "ripping someone off." Yes we all know that laptop isn't worth $800 but how many other family members know that? Nobody in my family would have a clue, thankfully they're all well trained - "If it plugs in, talk to Viper GTS."

Assuming malice here is simply idiotic unless there is a LOT of backstory.

Viper GTS

My family almost got that title on me, but it became such a hassle I've claimed ignorance for years.

I'd get 2am calls about corrupted floppies, calls about how to program vcr's to tape seinfeld, how to change ink jet carts, etc...

got old quick.

Because kids suck with money and they probably expected him to do exactly what the Aunt apparently did.
