I think my 75gxp is dying

had it about 2 months and just today it starts acting really loud and kinda slow, sluggish with a clicking sound kinda. dunno what to do

is it dying??
 
call IBM and whine and whine and whine more at them
to send you a new one if you are having problems with your drive.
its all about whining
 
Same here. I bought an IBM 75GPX three weeks ago, then I immediately patched the hard drive to prevent future troubles in partitioning, formatting, and data corruption. The first two weeks the drive was extremely quiet and fast. But now it is getting noiser and noiser. It is also getting slower and louder in caching and retrieving temporary internet files.

From what I have learn, the IBM 75GPX product line has many serious problems. The only reason I opted for the more expensive IBM 75GPX over Maxtor or Quantum was because all the senior members in here were braggin' about how great and fast and dependable IBM hard drives were. A member in here claimed that IBM hard drives could "run circle around any other hard drive"... well, that's bullshit. I have used both Maxtor and Quantum (and many other brands,) and this IBM 75GPX is the worst I have used.

 
I have no idea why, and I know it wasn't really that funny, but I got a good chuckle out of that post... thanks for the laughs WindBoy2000! 🙂

But actually yes he's right. You should call IBM and have the drive RMA'ed. They are pretty fast w/ their RMA service (Advanced RMA especially)
 
I got a 15GB version some time ago when they first came. It died on me all at once with no warning after 2 months of use. IBM was prompt with a RMA.
 
weird. I have read so many posts about people with dying or dead 75GXP's. Is it just because they are just popular drives? Oh well, I'm happy with my new Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 45

my secondary drive is a IBM 22GXP (7200rpm) and I've had it for a while...been happy with it's reliability and performance even though it can't shake a stick at the Diamondmax Plus 45.
 
I don't want to go thru calling up and waiting for the tech support/customer ervice, sending back the dead hard drive and then waiting for the new one to arrive, partitioning and formatting the replacement drive, and reinstalling the operating system and other programs. I wouldn't buy anything ever again from a company that makes me go thru all those hassles.
 
ya i dunno. i suspect there is a reliability issue with 75GXPs also. I have 2 22GXPs with which i've never had any problems. Up till the 75GXPs however, i've rarely heard of any IBM drives dying. And i think they've been pretty popular since the advent of the Deskstar back in the day.
 
I had a 3 month old 15 gig GXP that started making a clunking noise at startup and occasionally while in use. After a couple of days the same noise became a little more frequent. I downloaded IBM's diagnostic software and it gave the drive a clean bill of health. Ran it again a few days later and it said it detected some bad sectors and I should do a disk erase. 80% of the way thru it gave me a error message and after that then it failed the general diagnostics test. Luckily I had purchased it where I work and was able to get a replacement the next day.

The moral of the story is....back up the contents of the drive ASAP and get ahold of IBM pronto before it bites the big one!!!!!!
 
ktchong: all you have to do is call them up and request "Advanced" RMA service. All you have to do is provide you're CC # (for security reasons), and they will send out a new hard drive to you free of charge. This should take anywhere from 3 days to 2 weeks, but just the fact that you will be able to use you're own hd in the time being is nice rather than being hard drive-less and perhaps w/o a functioning computer b/c of it. Oh and after you receive the new hard drive you just ship back you're old to IBM.
 
Are these 75GXPs really that unreliable? I was thinking of getting a RAID setup with 2 of those but now I'm not so sure if the entire thing is going to collapse on me within months...
 
I patched my IBM 75GXP 30-gig with the Microsoft fix immediately after I installed Windows ME and before Microsoft officially released the fix. The hard drive ran extremely quiet during the first two-week of use, but now it is beginning to make noises.

At this point I don't want to RMA it because I still haven't completely done with putting together my new PC and am still shopping around for components. I will probably just return the IBM drive or exchange it for one from Maxtor or Quantum.

I maintain that IBM 75GXP has numerous serious quality issues (dying after weeks and months of use, making loud noises after awhile, corrupting data after Win98/ME shutting down, having trouble in partition/formatting, etc., etc.,) I have been reading way too many negative messages about this IBM hard drive in here. The quality of IBM hard drives is becoming like those of the generic RAM modules: sometimes people do get really good product, but many less-fortunate others get poor-quality one. There is just too much "chance" and "luck" involved. I paid for a premium-brand drive so I didn't have to take that kind of chance with quality. For some reason IBM's quality control is not as good as it used to be, but it is still charging premium prices while delivering sub-standard-quality products. People in here should stop recommending IBM hard drive (or at least the 75GPX line) to others already.
 
I have the 15gb version too, and i heard a clicking noises for awhile too. I played EQ, and it was particularly annoying because everytime it 'clicked', it froze the computer for 2-3 secs at a time, and during this freeze, i lagged behind everybody else in Everquest. So I could be successfully running away from some Hill Giants, then i would get the click, and they'll be on top of me pounding me to the ground.

Funny thing is, it's stopped now!
 
I wonder if the drive clicking is the source of my lock-ups in UT. It shouldn't be though since I think I have enough RAM (256MB) to prevent HD swapping but then again.

Anyway, I hate those Hill Giants too so I can sympathize.

I'm sorry you had problems with your IBM drive, but saying not to recommend the GXP line is a little extreme. I would be willing to bet you could find 200+ positive comments for every one negative when it comes to IBM drives. I have had 6 IBM drives(including 2 75gxp 30gigs) in my own computers and built approximately 8 computers for family and friends over the past 2 years that contained solely IBM drives; not a problem to date. No product is perfect and If you think you're shielded from quality control problems with other HD companies (cough...maxtor...cough)you could be in for a surprise.

Man this is interesting I have 2 IBM 22gxp's in my PC now and was thinking of selling them off for the new 75s. But now I don't know I will have to wait and see. I personally Have used alot of IBM drives and have never had a problem except one that was DOA so that was not a real big deal no data lost or anything.
