I've probably taken 500 myself. I'd guess that my brother in law's sister has taken twice as many, figure double that for her parents and you're up to like 3,500. Grandma and Grandpa on both sides, take it up to 6,000. Friends, family outside of that, I bet she averages 10 pictures of her taken a day, every day of her life.

When she was barely a year old she started reacting to smart phones because she understood that people were taking pictures of her. Before she was two she would start hamming it up every time something got pointed at her. It's unreal.

She lives in Chicago so I can't really help myself when I do get to see her. Everyone else has their excuse too. My sister told me that at one point my niece started running around saying "I'm cute!! I'm cute!!" but they were able to get her to stop doing that.

I don't know what my point is, it's just, when I was a kid, cameras came out for like, birthday parties and shit. I wonder what it's like to grow up with that. e\Every moment someone is shoving a phone in your face, snapping pics.

Also, I like wine. On fucking Tuesday evenings. Work will suck tomorrow.

I know the feeling. My niece is going to turn 8 this year. For 'reasons', my sister and niece have been living at my parents house for the past year or so, and they basically had my niece a great deal of the time before that because of my sister has an ever changing work schedule.

Back in the day my dad was a professional photographer. He had hard cases filled with different Canon cameras and a portrait camera and the works. He still loves taking pictures, so his main camera right now is an EOS 1D with like every lens you can get for it, even the big telephoto lenses like you see used at sporting events. And he has about 5 other models of Canon cameras so he always has one with him.

He's taken so many pictures of her that she acts like a model now and strikes poses whenever she sees a camera around. Sometimes she'll randomly ask to go outside and model. He's probably taken more than 7,000 photos all by himself.

I almost feel bad when I look at the meager amount of pictures I've taken on my phone of her throughout her life, but everything has been so well documented by him that I couldn't do a better job with my camera.

And yes, it's really different these days. We probably had a bunch more pictures taken than most, just because of my dad, but my niece could probably say "I wonder what I looked like on (insert whatever date here)" and there are likely multiple pics of her on that day.

I just can't get over how fast they grow up. I imagine if/when I have my own kid it will seem even faster, but it seems like 8 got here much faster than it should have.

I understand that feeling. My wife has taken approximately 400 million photos of our 8 month old daughter, and I've been slightly more reserved with (looking at phone gallery) seven. Wait, seven? It feels like more. Whatever. Anyway, our daughter is conditioned to understand phones as picture machines and literally nothing else, so anytime anyone anywhere takes out a phone, she's hamming it up. Like looking at that shit, smiling, acting all demure or staid or other words I don't quite know the definition of. She's going to grow up to be an actress or a model or a pharmacist or some shit. Yes, I realize pharmacists don't take a lot of selfies, but when I was a child I wanted to drive a garbage truck; it's important to leave your options open.

I don't know what we were talking about. Wine is fine, but being kept up by an infant that REFUSES TO GO THE FUCK TO SLEEP is quicker. Or more effective. Or whatever. GO THE FUCK TO SLEEP CHILD.

My point is, you're not alone. We're raising an entirely new selfie generation. It is going to suuuuuucckkkkkk....

I used to upload my wife's pix to the NAS and categorize them by place or event. I don't bother anymore because it's way, way too much work, given the sheer volume of them.

I think I'll just throw them all in Photos on the Mac, which automatically categorizes them by time and place, among other things.

Luckily we live in an era where my 2 TB hard drive is actually not that big of one.

Throw them on a PC which will automatically categorize it by date (and by location if you have GPS on your camera). Then be done with it.

Haha I gave up on that shit by the time my first turned 1. Everything gets dumped into \Pics\unsorted\

Definitely agree on the 1/50 stat. That's actually one reason I take so many, when there's a good photo opportunity I start snapping away, hoping to catch a really good smile or expression. Of my 500 pics, I have about a dozen that I really love.

Maybe even less than 1/50 for me. I use my iPhone burst mode sometimes, which means 10 shots per second, to give myself a better chance of capturing a good shot.

And ironically, the best shot I have of her so far is by my wife's twelve year old relative, taken as a one-shot deal with her cell phone randomly with no preparation.

As for the topic, if I ever have kids I cannot see myself taking millions of useless pictures of them. My parents have picture albums of my brother and I, and my dad had a camcorder, but they didn't go overboard like parents seem to do today. I'll most likely continue their tradition, more or less.

The thing is that phones are always with you so that you can capture moments that a big honking SLR wouldn't. Plus latter Galaxy models, iPhones, Nexus and LG phones take decent pics. Remember those funny blurry Polaroid pics that your mom kept around just because they were adorable moments? Image quality isn't everything.

My mother did, but she was a professional photographer. After she died, we went through multiple file cabinets filled with identical prints of a bunch of her work. To this day, I refuse to pose for photos. I have no idea where my daughter gets it from.
