I think I've found the darkest beer I've ever drank

I was crusing around my local beer market looking for a thank you gift for a friend that gave me a box full of really nice clothes and striderite shoes for my daughter.

He's a huge Bears fan and found this beer from Walter Paytons brewery in Aroura, where my friend is from as well.

It's the Imperial Bourbon Stout. I grabbed a pack for me too, and I just cracked one open. As I poured it into the glass the lights in the house started to dim and I think I actually saw it being sucked into the glass as the beer poured in.

Holding this thing up to the light yields no pass through. It's as black as the deepest abysses of the ocean. A mear drop of this would cloud an entire pint of lighter brews.

And then on to the tasting. It's certainly unique. A strong bourbon aroma fills the glass and nips at your taste buds, you can defintely taste the oak barrel aging. The beer itself is very balanced. Heavy malts, but well balanced with plenty of bitters to keep the sweetness down.

And the scary part is that I found the alcohol % of this stuff.....12%
A couple of these and you'll fall out of the barstool when you get up. I wouldn't have guessed that given how well they balanced the sweetness.

Here's a link to the beer page:

And finally...beer p0rn of an actual glass of it on my desk....

Mmm.

It's been awhile since I've had a beer that passed the 'match test'

Thanks, I'll keep my eyes open for that one down here.

sounds like Spaten Optimator 🙂

glad it tasted good, i think sam adams had a beer that was 18% or 21%, tasted like wine 🙁

Mmm.. I could go for a nice dark stout right about now. Mikkeller Black was pretty damned dark from what I remember, as where NognO's Dark Horizon, and Jolly Pumpkin's Madrugada Obscura. Some good stuff.

utopias?

i'm a fan of smithwicks

This beer is so heavy that it's not something I'd want a second one of. 12oz is plenty sufficient. In fact, I think that an 8oz pour would probably be almost ideal - basically a small tulip glass/snifter worth. After so much of it you almost overwhelm your taste buds.

I usually drink from the bottle, but sometimes when I go to rinse out the bottles the next day I'll pour the little bit of the remaining beer in the sink and think, "WTF was I drinking last night, used motor oil?"

Beer of the Month Club, FTW.

Light beers are fine from the bottle. But anything with any sort of aroma - hops, fruits, chocolate, ect needs to be in a glass so that you can dip your nose in there and just suck up the flavor while you sip on it.

Same for a beer I used to drink in Germany.
