I think it's time for a leather sofa.

You know your furniture salesman gets a 40% commission on the markup, right? (And if you pay up front, that means he gets his commission sooner, which is why he's inclined to knock the price down a little.)

My opinion: this thread needs a good old-fashioned dose of RossMAN.

Retail is $3,150, the closest that my local furniture store will come is $1,999, not including tax.

Please know that I did *some* research. I won't get it at wholesale, but I don't mind paying a couple hundred dollars in order for the store to make a reasonable profit. I'm purchasing it from the store owner.

That being said, I research most of my major purchases. I'm well aware that I could find a more inexpensive leather sofa. Just as any of us in this forum would probably prefer an ASUS P5E3 Deluxe with some great memory and a new stepping on the processor, rather than a 'Dell'.

Fair enough. I guess I more of a "why buy the Acura when the Accord does the same thing?" kind of thinker.

That said, I am using a very nice computer that I built myself less than a year ago. 4GB RAM, 2.4 GHz Core Duo, Intel BX2, etc.

But a $3,100 couch? I didn't even know they got that expensive. (Well, I did see that "$4000 sofa upholstered in Italian silk" in American Beauty, but Annette Benning's character was intentionally over the top, so I never counted that.)

Sounds like you know what you're doing.

I love the leather set I just bought (loveseat, recliner, arm chair), but I wouldn't pay $1.6K for the couch linked in the OP.

it doesn't look comfortable at all... more like something you'd stick in the waiting area at an office.

It looks like a nice couch to look at but not sit in. I would continue to shop around. Do you have a Value City Furniture near you? I got my first leather couch there about 8 years ago for around $600 and it's still going strong. Also, as previously mentioned...looks for a "leather touch" sofa or whatever they call it. Everything your body touches is leather but the back and other parts are vinyl. Can often save you a lot of money.

Also, I learned never buy furniture off the internet. Had to return a $3K bedroom set a couple years ago.

Our leather set is going on 13 years now, and we have not regretted it one bit.
I think we paid 2100 or so for a sofa and loveseat with 4 recliners built in, and the mechanics have a lifetime warranty. I've got a couple of small tears in the non-leather part, but the leather is holding up fine.

Nice sofas. They'd be worth looking in to, unfortunately they wouldn't fit in my apartment given the dimensions listed. Thanks for the post, though.

We bought a sectional made by Palliser last spring. It's an incredibly comfortable piece of furniture and looks pretty good too. A large number of leather types and colors are available.

Prices can be competitive. I know that I could buy a love seat for around $1200 depending on the leather/color.
