I think it's time for a leather sofa.

I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on this sofa and it's not that expensive. Only $1,645, no tax and an additional 5% off if you pay up front, but 8 weeks for delivery.

Is leather really that scrumptious to lounge in?

Edit: Don't download the high resolution photo on that site. It's a 112 MB .tif of the same picture.

Good leather is nice. Cool during the winter (I keep my home heated @ 65).

Only concern is when it tears...

With pets and kids...I'd own nothing other than leather. Wipe up the mess and you are done. With the right type of leather it's virtually indestructable. My 80 pound dog has been climbing up and down on our couch for years and is no worse for wear.

Just keep them conditioned and cleaned and they'll wear on forever. As for the "cold" comment, it's only cold for the first few seconds you climb in. After that it warms up and holds heat a lot better than cloth.

As for that particular couch - it doesn't look like much of a lounging piece of furniture. It doesn't look like it screams "SIT IN ME!!!".

I have a limited range of pieces to select from due to some limited entry dimensions of my apartment.

If you have pets - do a simple test.

When you go to the showroom just take your finger nails and rake them across the arm and seat of the couch. See if it leaves a visible mark. If it does...your pets aren't going to be very easy on it.

If you can scratch across it without leaving a mark that bodes much better. There are many different types/finishes of leather. Some vastly more pet/kid/scuff friendly than others.

I have to get to the show room. There's supposed to be about 250 different leather selections for the Bradington Young models.

JC Penny Leather Shop

They have some incredible deals here! I just have to wonder about leather products from China or Asia. What are they preserved with? There have been recalls on leather coats before that China had used banned products on in the preservation process. And then the leather... just how many cows are in China? And if not cowhides, then what hides??? And with a billion plus people over there... I shudder to think... but Hannibal Lecter would be so proud! And the all natural tattoos on the leather are a freebie!

I've had a couple cats and a few different leather sofas. Never had a problem with them scratching it. For some reason most cats don't seem to like scratching leather.

Leather is an excellent material to make furniture out of. It is easy to clean, hard to destroy and generally it looks better with age which is the opposite of fabric covered furniture. We have a leather sofa in the family room and another one in the livingroom along with a matching leather loveseat.

BTW-I also have a 5 year old and a dog but the dog doesn't ever get up on the furniture.

No offense but that couch looks extermely uncomfortable. It appears to be more for looks than for lounging so if that is what you are going for by all means get it. If you are going for comfort with a decent style I would shop around.

Had a leather couch that I just got rid of last weekend. My wife hated it, so we went with a microfiber one.
I wasn't a fan of the leather either. Sure they breathe, but in the summer when it's hot, you stick to it (no matter how well it breathes).

Surely you can do better than $1645, especially if you get leather everywhere you sit but vinyl back/sides. I got my black leather/vinyl for $400, granted that's crazy low but surely you could get something cheaper.

Oh, and shop around. I managed to get a 5 piece sectional, ottoman, leather coffee table, end table, 2 lamps and an area rug for 50% off.
Don't be afraid to negotiate and walk away if the company won't come down on price. I finally settled for the 7th store I talked to.

I have a leather living room set from before I was married and while it's in pretty good condition still, my wife is itching to get something else.

She doesn't like leather :(

Edit: that one you linked looks to formal for my taste.

Pets and kids are the reasons I recently got a leather sofa. Much easier to keep clean, and my wife and I both like it.

Oh, and I like the looks of that sofa you linked. You never know if it'll be comfy until you sit on it, though. When shopping I sat in a lot of sofas that looked like they'd be comfy but weren't.

I own a leather couch and love it.
IMO leather is the most comfortable surface for a couch, and it's relatively durable. As an added bonus, it also doesn't look bad.

The sofa you've got picked out looks gorgeous. I've got a leather love seat and it is absolutely amazing. I love leather. If feels like I sink right in every time I sit on it, yet it doesn't really have that too cushiony type of feel that some fabric sofas have that are too unstructured. It looks great too.

I don't have any pets or children though, so I'm not sure how it would be with them.

We got our first real/leather couch this past summer. It's beautiful, from Ikea and was only about $1100-ish. Personally, I think leather is too "cold" and smooth to sit and live on. Fabric feels a lot nicer, but is obviously a lot harder to keep clean. Go for leather to "fit in", look good and for easy cleaning. Just hope you are careful, or you'll "fit in" even more with duct tape...

You have to sit on a couch to see if it fits your shape. Depth of seat and height play a big part in a couch being comfy or just takes up room.

"Only" $1700 for that little thing? OK.

You know your furniture salesman gets a 40% commission on the markup, right? (And if you pay up front, that means he gets his commission sooner, which is why he's inclined to knock the price down a little.)

My opinion: this thread needs a good old-fashioned dose of RossMAN.
