Lee Kum Kee for the win! Yes I love that stuff, although I found some Soy Paste (more frequently used by Taiwanese) which can act as both my soy sauce and oyster sauce.. That way I don't have to waste space in the fridge for stuff I rarely use

Look. It's common courtesy. When you use the bathroom and you take a major dump, do you leave the fan off? Obviously not. Do you clean up after yourself so no one has to deal with it? Sure.

It's just like I'll eat Durian, but in my apartment. I live with 3 other guys, and I have the courtesy of keeping my music down when it's night time (Z-2300s). Similarly, you shouldn't be cooking stuff that stinks up the whole apartment when everyone else is around. MUST you eat Fish SAUCE? Gosh.

How is cooking what you want in a household you pay for not common courtesy? I think you are confusing common courtesy with your own desires.
If they like fish sauce why would they restrain from eating it?
Where exactly is this person going to cook the food if they can't do it in their own household?

Taking a dump and leaving the fan off is not comparable to cooking your favorite foods. Blaring your music when others is sleeping is also not comparable.

Part of living with others is dealing with things you don't like.

yes, make fried stinky tofu and use kimchee instead of asian pickled cabbage with it. then have sliced chilled durian afterwards ( i saw some for sell at golden mountain market in dc for 99cents a pound). can't think of anything else asian that stinks...er

Which reminds me of the time my aunt boiled up 5 liters of fish sauce before she bottled them, ah good times, good times. I think the aroma traveled around the world a few times and has settled somewhere in the upper stratosphere, either that or somewhere above LA.

SampSon: part of living with other people means you need to respect them also. Favorite food to some people may mean hell to others, but you don't have to traumatize them with the smell. You know VERY WELL (or maybe you don't because you're not one of us Asian brothers) that Fish Sauce is something a LOT of people don't like. Sure many people like it, but you know a good chunk of Asia does NOT use Fish Sauce. Moreover, do you think the rest of white America understands even remotely what fish sauce is? If you marched white America through a room smelling like fish sauce I can guarantee you 80% of them would tell you it's trash or a stinking pile of sh!t.

Not turning on the fan in the bathroom is EXACTLY the same. I need to take a dump, but I can also turn on the fan. Fish Sauce is not some magical ingredient that you HAVE to live off of. And if you think we Chinese use soy sauce for all cooking you are just freaking wrong. So we don't need soy sauce in every dish and nor do we need fish sauce in every dish, meaning someone doesn't need to stink up the whole apartment when cooking.

He could've easily told us to close our doors before stinking up the place. It's common courtesy. Some people have it, some people don't.
