I think I'm doing something wrong with my OC

Hi,

It's been about 4 years since I've upgraded but I finally did it yesterday.

I bought an Asus P5K-Deluxe, E6600 "A" batch, 4GB G.Skill DDR800 4-4-3-5 memory, etc.

I went into the bios and changed the settings to 8X multiplier and 400Mhz FSB. On the boot up, it lists the speed as 3.2Ghz. When I run Sisandra it tells me I am running at 3.2Ghz but on CPU-Z, I get 2.4Ghz. Am I doing something wrong here?

I heard there is an alternate Bios menu for the Asus but I seem to be able to change the settings under the jumperless settings option.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks.

DD

Thanks for the links.

I think something different is going on though. I set my bios at 8x400 and the bootup screen says 3.61ghz. Under CPU-Z it says 2.4Ghz. I don't understand what is going on.

speedstep's my guess...

if it's not that, look at this pic

in the red box that says 3GHz, is that where yours says 2.4GHz, or is it in the one that says 2410.8? regardless, what does it say on yours in those boxes? the one that says 3GHz in that pic is the stock speed of the processor (part of the model number), and the other box is the actual clock speed.

Here's a pic I took. Sorry about the quality. I still haven't figured out Vista or installed all my programs yet.

Screenshot

Orthos is showing 3.825Ghz. When it was running, CPU-Z was 3.6Ghz. I set the OC at 8x425Mhz which shows up correctly on the boot up screen as 3.4Ghz. My temps are 45-49c under stock cooling. Unless I got the best E6600 ever, I somehow think these numbers are wrong.

Turn off C1E, EIST, and Speedstep, orthos is reading 3.825ghz because it's taking the stock multiplier and multiplying it by your FSB of 425 instead of the 8x multiplier, you REALLY need to not oc that much if you're using the STOCK cooler.

Thanks.

My PC seems stable at 8x425Mhz. Under full load, the temperature hasn't exceeded 50c. Is that ok? The only tweak I did under stock cooling was use Arctic Silver on the chip.
