True, but there is other stuff in vodka. I used to work with 100% pure research grade EtOH and it smelled like candy. I never drank it, but we also had access to highly purified deionized water (which apparently tastes like nothing), and could have made the world's most perfect vodka.

And 1L of 100% pure EtOH was something like $7, and that was the expensive stuff. Go down to 99.5% and it dropped off in price quite a bit.

Would you have felt safe drinking it though? The concentration standards for a chem lab would be much stricter than for food I would think. So that remaining 0.5-1% most certainly should be water and nothing else bad, after all any other containments could seriously fuck up lab work. But then fucked up lab work is one thing, what you put in your body is another. I've heard stories of people on university campuses making their own home brew this way. Wonder how safe it is compared to regular distilled liquor?
