I probably would have asked a sales associate to see the demo of what the guy stole. Of course the sales associate would notice that the item was missing and then maybe inform them that the person was just fiddling with it moments ago, and then the employees could further investigate. Of course, you are trying to inform them of the loss as opposed to accusing the person outright that he stole it.

Another reason that maybe nothing was said right away was because no sale associates where around. One was getting me the product I wanted from the back and it seems like they had limited staff that morning. It was 10:30am the store had just opened.

Well they can't do anything anyway if loss prevention didn't see him put it in his jacket. They need to see 5 things before they can detain him. If they're just going by another customer's suspicion I guess the best they could do is make the guy conscious of them and maybe he'll dump the item somewhere in the store.

Detaining a customer based on suspicion alone is asking for a lawsuit if he comes up empty.

Better yet, your moms should've accused him of groping her and called him a "fresh" pervert and started beating him with her purse. That would've brought attention to this a$$wipe, and he would've been scared $hitle$$.

What would you do when he got up and started beating the sh!t out of you for tripping him? Cry like a little bitch?

no one gets up and starts wailing on someone for getting tripped. you obviously come from a broken home...

maybe stealth and thievery are some of the skills they are looking for in a Staples employee? Did you read the position posting?

All we can do as Staples employees is basically follow the person around until he/she leaves. You can not go after someone UNLESS you see the person attempt to steal and hide the item and then watch the person walk out the door. You have to see the person do this completely and if you lose site of the person, we can not go after them in any way because that = lawsuit if they really didnt steal anything. I caught a former employee steaing some dvd-r's but couldnt do anything. The shrink at our store is way down though compared to last year as Staples has gotten smarter about its security.

You could have said something, although all that would have happened is the manager would have had his or her 6-10 employees watching the guy like a hawk until he left.

if it was OFFICE MAX, they would've interrogated the fool under some white-hot lights and subjected him to water torture, all the while calling him a fruityloop while whipping him with an old telephone cord.

you Staple's employees are some punk biatches.

*Note to self*

1. Go to local office max and walk around with big parka during the middle of spring.
2. Pretend to put something in big, obvious parka.
3. Get interrogated by the pimple faced, barely post adolescent assistant manager.
4. Drive directly to lawyer.
5....
6. Profit!

That's pretty crazy, but it's good you didn't tell. Doing good stuff for stores that are national usually doesn't result in anything that fantastic. My friend got a really expensive gold-plated stick of PC4000 RAM from Fry's and he didn't even know it. When he returned it, they gave him like a 5 dollar gift card or something, even though he probably could've pawned it for 200-300 easily.

Didn't the camera catch it? what about those detectors?
Shutting your mouth was smart. If you told the manager, you would probably get a $250 gift card:laugh:

Wow...how witty.

Why don't you try it and see what happens. I personally try to avoid picking fights with people who obviously have little or no regard for the law.

I absolutely hate theives. I'veh ad some pretty bad encounters with them in the past and it just makes me cringe when I hear of what sounds like to be a person who is pretty sure that there was something stolen.

What makes me more upset is that this guy didn't seem to try and hide it much. Assuming he did steal something, normally people are more careful about people not seeing them. Anyhow, I hope he gets caught before he gets caught up on bigger items like vehicles or electronics in someone's home. :(

I say better safe than sorry. Certainly if someone thought I had stole something, I wouldh ave no problems letting them check my pockets. I guess some people get offended by that. But if I know i'm innocent then there is nothing to be upset about.

A friend of mine once won employee of the month. The hilarious part was that month, the month he won it for, he'd been pissed off and stole an assload of merchandise from them. Like every day he came back with something else.

Companies are stupid. :p

yes its what the smarter thieves do. whats better? talking to employees or sulking around in dark corners of the store.

I went to Staples yesterday with my mom. We were in the electronics section where most items are all locked up behind the counter or a glass window, but they have the tape recorder and electronic dictionaries in display tied to some sort of plastic cord for security reasons.

Anyways I was looking at some stuff on the glass window when I heard a snap and look to see what it was and immediately saw this guy hand put something in his big parka sweater and act stupid. Now I didn?t see it completely if he stole something but my mom said right away that he just took some machine like item and snapped the cable attached to it and put it in his pocket.

The guy proceeded to walk away and just looking around and I kept watching him and I think I saw him put something else but it was about 120 feet away when he did that so I again could not confirm it. I asked my mom if she wanted to say something and she decline, she did not want to be put in a legal battle etc.

Here is the funny part, as I was paying he was behind me at another counter and he was asking for job application and they told him to come back Monday. Think that was just part of his cover.

What would you guys done, said something or just ignore it.

Cliff notes:
Maybe saw shoplifter, mom said she did see him
Mom didn?t want to say anything
Shoplifter asked for a job as a cover story.
Should I have said something?

live and let live.

you should have said something...

they would not have held you as a witness or anything.

If it was your store, you would appreciate it
