I have found my desk to be quite adiquate. Sure every now and then it needs to be cleaned and trimed and some of the stuff taken off it which only makes my desk look bigger but I also know on a good account my wife likes my desk just the way it is. Its not the size that matters but how well you can sit next to your desk without it taking up all the space around it. Having a big desk for some people hurts the space they put it in because its just to huge for the hole or corner it was placed into.
Some people are obsessed with must having a bigger desk but you really only need the one. You can try to add onto it but most of the time the adding on can make it look all messed up. If you dont use a ruler it and measure correctly can end up being uneven and some times actually look as though its leaning to the right or left. Also some times it could be so bad no one would want to sit near it or want to even look at your desk. So just wanted to say yes your desk may look small but its how well you can put stuff on it and still be satisfied that counts.

The height of my keyboard tabletop is 24", which is EXACTLY keyboard tray height.

But your point wasn't about the height of the keyboard. Your point was that you shouldn't put a keyboard on top of your workspace.

The subject of this topic is "I think I need a bigger desk". I don't have that problem, because I have the entire workspace to my right for "extra space". Notice my wife's workspace does employ a keyboard drawer?

and that is exactly about 8 inches too low
Exactly about?

Do you know how to use a tape measure, or yardstick?

Keyboard Height
  • ...Usually a desk designed for writing will be too high for typing. A good typing height is a few inches lower than writing height. Just a little above the lap is usually a good keyboard height. Put the keyboard on your lap, and put your fingers on the home row. You should notice the keyboard is roughly the same height or slightly lower than your elbow.

How to reduce this keyboard height when the table is too high? There are a few options. You can put the keyboard on your lap...
Posture Recommendations and Equipment Placement
  • Posture Recommendations and Equipment Placement

Adjust your chair or keyboard tray so your wrists and forearms are in a neutral position, which is the most natural.
Keyboard height
  • Adjust keyboard height so arms and forearms are at right angles or slightly greater and forearms and hands form straight lines.
Adjust keyboard tray height
  • Adjust the height of the keyboard tray so that the forearms are roughly parallel to the floor, or with hands slightly lower than your elbow. Elbow angle should be 90° or more, depending on comfort. Some evidence suggests that an elbow angle of 110° to 120° can reduce stress on the ulnar nerve.
Where Should the Keyboard Be?
  • So, the simple fact of having the keyboard up too high brings with it all manner of efforts to compensate, most of which bring other problems with them. At the very least, these attempts to adjust won't stay comfortable very long.

The position of the keyboard so that your wrists are straight, your shoulders are relaxed, and your arms can move freely is central and critical to preventing injury to your hands and arms.
