I will be getting a Wii next week, my first console since Sega genesis. I will not be upgrading my PC anytime soon(AMD 3200, 1gig ram, X800XL, had it for two years). So I guess I agree. I picked up a 36 inch Sony SD TV off craiglist for $150. I think i'll be good for a while.
For me, it's hard to go back to console gaming. Consoles games in my perspective are just too simple and do not provide the depth and variety of PC games. I grew up playing MSX, Nintendo, the original Gameboy, and SNES, but as I grew older I lost interest in console games. I have tried Gamecube and PS2, but I ended up returning them or selling them on Ebay. I didn't bother with XBox as it is basically a PC. I tried my friend's XBox 360, but I couldn't get into it.
Perhaps it's because I mostly play RTS and strategy games and sometimes FPS.

Everytime I try to give up computer gaming I fail. I know just sold my console and it will be at least another year before I pick up the 360.
I'm down to upgrading every 3 years. My problem right now is I have an AGP board with an AGP radeon 9800 AIW. To upgrade this is what I need to do:

New motherboard
Probably ddr2 ram
new pcie graphics card
SATA hard drive to replace my 2 pata drives.
500 to 600 i am looking at to play ut2007 and quake wars. OUCH!
And I play things like simcity 4 and the 2nd UT game. Will be adding black and white 2 to my list shortly.

You don't need a new motherboard to upgrade your graphics, you can get away with upgrading your AGP video card one last time and not have to regret it.
The last time I actually bought a game was about ten years ago--and it came with a graphics card.

I dont buy the latest and greatest. I just built a new machine Socket 939 AMD 3700 San Diego AMD SLI MotherBoard 160 SATA HD 1 gig ram 550 watt PS 7600 GT video card. The CPU is only single core but 1 mb L2 cache. and a decent OCer. Same with the Mobo, will OC when I want it too and SLI for future cards with Raid 0,1. This will last a couple years with the upgrades available.
My last machine lasted me three years with the games I played. Barton 2500 OCed to 3200. Video card was a 6800 GT that with a firmware hack opened up 4 more pipes. Motherboard is stable OCed for 3 years. This rig still runs great and plays the games with most eye candy on and great FPS. I just wanted to build a another rig. I had no problem running FEAR or PREY at most settings maxed out but then I play at 1024x768 so that helps.
I buy price for performance with parts that will OC to extend the rigs life. When I find a game that will not run like I want then I will slip in another card and/or more memory.
I can afford to build a new one every year but I just dont see the need to. When new CPU's come and the last generation start to fall in price, that when I usually build if I need to. It is really kind of a waste of money IMHO to build every time something new comes out.

Umm, I think you are nuts. Your computer is fantastic. You have no reason to upgrade.
3 years ago to this month I bought a P4 2.8 , 1 g ram, 9800 pro for $600 total. I have not upgraded a thing and I still could play the latest games. Even NWN 2 I have no problems with. Even on the absolute lowest details the game looks nice. But of course, nwn 2 is poorly optimized. BF 2 played with no problems on medium settings on my computer.
Additionally, pc games are a ton cheaper than console games. If you wait a few months, most could be had for $20 or less as well. Personally, I just don't enjoy the simplicity of console games. They bore me.
Games I enjoyed over the last year or so: KOTOR 1, 2, NWN 2, Avernum 1-3, Geneforge 1-3, Civ 4, bunch of adventure games, EQ2, Battlefield 2 and SF expansion.
I still have a 9500 , down from two broken 9800 Pros. Again, keep it on the low and it's far cheaper than even console gaming; considering the lower cost of PC games and all that sweet freeware. Plus when you already have a computer for other functions, just add a decent video card and you're good to go. It's actually cheaper even with quality hardware IMO.

Stop gaming a while back. There are more rewarding things in life other than beating the last boss. Sold my 7800GT and went with a fanless 7300GS for $50. I think I will stick with this card until it breaks. My computer fever went away with the urge to play video games.
Sounds like you need to find yourself better games. I don't have all the time in the world to game myself, but an occasional flight in the ol' flight simulator x or a random total war battle is very nice indeed. I think senseless 'boss battle' grinder games are the source of your problem with games.
To top off this argument, I feel I am getting more and more ripped off buying top of the line hardware because games are even less optimized for todays hardware than they were 5 years ago.

How many games will use PS4.0 in 6 months? Probably zero. It took forever for them to even put PS3.0 in games. I will even go as far as to say that the first games that use it were ports from Xbox 360. That is right, it is now console development that is pushing PC development and not the other way around.

I think games are fun until you realize that they are pointless.... then again, that could be said for many things.
In that case try not to think about the pointlessness of playing a game. Fun things don't have a point other than that being the point itself. IMO life is pointless if you can't find time to have fun.
That's one thing I admire about stupid people; probably the only thing. They're stupid and they don't know it, but more importantly they don't care. Their sole purpose in life is to find new methods of having fun. Ignorance really is bliss.

The calculation isn't completely appropriate. Most people already have the foundation system; computers are used for just about everything afterall. In most cases you can skip the 'dell' part and just focus on a video card.
It's amusing how everyone always uses the price of top-end components of an entire PC to try and make some sort of claim in favor of console gaming, it just doesn't work.
Last major upgrade I did was for my ATI X800XL from a ATI 9500, that was about 2 years ago, I can still play any game no problems, that & the fact the max my LCD can do is 1280x1024, so no need to upgrade unless I get a larger LCD.
