I think I might get out of pc gaming, a little too expensive

I started playing my xbox 360 recently, I've had it all year, but I never really played it much. With the rising cost of pc gaming, it doesn't make much sense to keep pc gaming, granted I'll always prefer pc gaming over console gaming it seems. I might just buy an 8800GTS next year and that'll be it for my pc gaming hobby. Anyone else here do the same?

Nope, I don't. but then again, it costs more to have the better stuff... just goes with the territory. I knew that going into it, so the prices never surprise me. Besides, all I have to do is look at the consoles, and that makes me excited all over again about PC gaming.

Rising cost of PC gaming? Not really...the brand new hardware has usually always cost about the same. If you want rising costs...you're looking at consoles. GG PS3

You say you might get out of PC gaming, but you're planning on buying an 8800GTS next year. So, that's at least 1 year of PC gaming until you buy the 8800, then a few years more of insane, then awesome, then good, then fair gaming...by this point it's 2010 or 2011 and you're still PC gaming. When, exactly, are you getting out of PC gaming? I'm just playing around, not trying to give you a hard time, but it's just sort of funny that your "exit plan" for PC gaming involves a hot upgrade a year from now.

I have absolutly no intention of buying a ps3. There is no way I'm spending that much money on something that plays games. At least a pc can do a lot of other practical tasks. I didn't mean what I said about the rising cost of pc gaming, I mean that it's more expensive than I thought it would be when I first got into it. I could game on old hardware, but if I have the money to buy new hardware and I want to buy new hardware, I usually will buy new hardware. This does not include $600 video cards though.

lol, I meant January of next year. I don't know how long the 8800GTS is going to last at the rate the gpu market is increasing.

Well it looks like (from your brief sig anyway) that you've got a highly decent system for gaming; what monitor are you on? I mean, even without the new 8800, I'd say you're good for a good while yet unless you're running really high res or something; or perhaps you're just an eye-candy junky like me. And in a year, those 8800gtx's will be under $500, especially on ebay; maybe even less. I mean, people go through consoles that fast these days so.... gaming can be equally expensive no matter how you do it, unless you cut corners. Fewer consoles? slower GPUs?

PC gaming is dirt cheap as long as you don't have to get every game the week it comes out. Play games that are a year old. You can buy them for $10 instead of $50-$60 and by that time their hardware requirements are easier to meet too. The only way PC gaming is hard on the wallet is if your ego demands you stay on the cutting edge and you get stuck on the constant cycle of needing to upgrade your box in order to play the new stuff. Besides, games that are a year old have already had 6 or 7 patches and are better than the new ones.

ive been playing on an athlon xp 2700+ and a 9700pro.... still runs stuff well enough. And now I have my laptop, with a 2.0ghz and a mobility x700, which gives comparable performance. How old is the 9700pro anyway? like 4? And when i bought it, it was already something like 2 years old. Before that I had a geforce2 GTS. Moral of the story: dont buy the top of the line stuff all the time, and its not that expensive. You're thinking about a 8800GTS.. isnt that going to be like the top of the line $500-$600 card? Buy the new midrange card, or one from the previous generation instead.

QFT. I got my CPU in May 04 and my 6800GT in December 04. I'm not upgrading until next summer. ~$500 for 3 years of gaming? Yeah it's a little more expensive than Consoles, but not much.

I game at 1600 by 1200 usually. This card has trouble at that res sometimes, but it isn't too bad. You've got a point about people going through consoles fast. I should do the math and see how much more pc gaming is than console gaming. Console games usually cost more than pc games anyway, $60 to $50 most of the time. So I'll do the math to see how much each costs.

The 8800GTX is the top of the line. The GTS is cut down a bit and should drop in price faster than the GTX if it follows last year's trend. The 7800GTX prices dropped a lot slower than the 7800GT did.

Gaming isn't expensive. Over the past five years I've kept the same core computer and only spent maybe $800 total... and I was an idiot buying B&M up until recently! You don't need an 8800GTX or 3GB of RAM or a 1KW power supply to enjoy games, unless you're a graphics whore.

That's not really a console issue. That's a Sony issue since they are forcing you to pay a premium to buy their blu-ray drive.

I'm pretty much done with PC gaming because for one I'm tired of upgrading and two I don't really game as much as I used to. I would say it's an age thing but then again I play my 360 ... :p

If you don't mind playing with crappy graphics using old hardware
And if you don't mind pirating video games

Then pc gaming is really really cheap

Yeah I did. The cost was one thing; I had an ATI X1900 that I got towards the end of the spring, and when the 7950GX2's came out I was itching for one of those. Another $500+ down the drain....for some pixels?

That and I just don't have the time to game that I used to. It ate up too much of my time and while I found I have much more time to do non-gaming stuff now, that time is of course eaten up with productive things.

I don't really have to the time to play games anymore. If I do I just fire up the gamecube for some SSX Tricky or the SNES for some Mario Allstars.

I've had the same processor/motherboard for about 3-4 years. What I've bought over that time period has been:

1. My passive PSU (Phantom 350w)
2. X800 XT PE to replace a 9800 pro, which I sold on e-bay, so it only "really" cost me about $100
3. Raptor hard drive to replace a drive that was going flaky, though the Samsung now seems stable
4. Switched to P180 case for quietness and Acoustipack
5. Bought Nexus fans and fan isolators
6. Media/floppy combo to replace floppy
7. Another gig of RAM, mostly to deal with stuttering issues when FEAR came out

Really, I'm probably good to go for a few more years. If you can live with running something below 1600x1200, and I can still run most games at that, you can get by without upgrading THAT much. Even so, I still find myself playing older games more because the ones I plunk down $50 on are usually (not always) games I'll enjoy playing multiple times before getting sick of it.

Did a while back.

Not only is it expensive, there are very few games coming out that I can't get on the Xbox.

I gave up awhile ago. Got tired of upgrading, tired of spending the money, tired of messing with settings, drivers, etc. So now I have a Nintendo DS, just sold my old Xbox and I'm getting a 360. I have an HDTV so I'd much rather sit on the couch and play a game on that, rather than sit in a computer chair and stare at a monitor.
