I think I messed up my relationship to get a recommendation letter

I asked a colleague where I did an internship about a year ago to write a letter for me and she agreed. She told me she just returned from her trip to attend her grandfather's funeral. I did not know how to respond so I wrote something like this..

"Hi xxxxx,

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your grandfather. I know I'll be sad when my grandfather passes away. I hope that you're doing okay and I hope the rest of your 2009 is off to a great start. Thank you for agreeing to write the letter. It will mean a lot and help the strength of my application...." and it went on with the information about the letter.

Am I over-analyzing or should I have said something more? It may have come across like I didn't care?
It has been about a week and no response so I'm concerned.

You should not have mixed the two issues together.

After a week, contact her and ask about the status of the recommendation.

That sounded so fake to me and really comes off bad after what you wrote preceeding. But its not THAT bad that someone should withhold a recommendation letter. Chances are something else came up for her.

I thought your email was fine. I certainly would not have taken offense at mixing the two topics.

lmao...wow, you make it sound so trivial and like you're rubbing it in her face that your grandfather is still alive. lol

any mention of her grandfather should have ended with "I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your grandfather."

You should have sent one first that just asked about the letter.

Then the next day send a condolences letter pretending like you just found out.
