I was trying to get online on my computer (on my g/f's now) and I couldn't surf anywhere which is kinda normal just a restart and I am good to go.

Instead stupid me I decided to go into the command prompt and do ipconfig /release

Now I can't connect to the internet with that computer no matter what.

How is it that my computer can't surf but my g/f's can even though we are using the same modem and internet connection. They are not networked. I just unpluged mine and plugged hers in and good to go.

I have tried everything I can think of but to avail.

What did I do and how can I get my computer back online?

I am running windows 2000

EDIT:Fixed problem reconnected my computer then did the ipconfig /renew and it worked this time. Go figure thanks for the help guys

Go back to your command prompt and type ipconfig /renew

That should do it... 🙂

[edit] When you typed ipconfig /release, you just released your IP address... renew forces your modem to request a new one.

keep trying... still get the error? it's happened to me before, good quick formatting skills though 😉 always fix the problem.

gives me some DCHP error I believe

Before you type this, verify that you have an ethernet link to either your modem or router, and that this link is active. It is also possible that you are using an ISP that uses some kind of trick to prevent you from connecting multiple PCs and getting more than one ip. Try shutting off the cable/dsl modem, shutting off the PC, then turning on the modem (wait for it to synch up), and then turn on the PC. It is also possible that the ISP registers the MAC address of the NIC used in the PC to make the connection, and will only provide an IP to that particular MAC address (MediaOne/Roadrunner used to do this, I don't know if they still do.)

I've never had 2 computers online at once so that isn't the problem, it's always been one or the other.

And stev0 I am sure reformatting will work but I don't want to do that

I am online with my g/f computer and thats good enough till i get this figured out

try pinging 127.0.0.0 if that works ping your router. if you cant ping your router change cables. try pinging again still cant ping, bounce your router. just work you way up.
