I think I just realized something with keyboard positions

I've noticed that for a long time that the placement of a standard mouse and keyboard is not ideal for anybody. Most people I encounter keep their mouse to the right of them simply because the computer assumes everyone is right handed unless you tell it otherwise and they don't know about that feature. So while mice are predominately right handed, the keyboards seem to be left handed. Why? Well because I notice that I have to tilt my keyboard or my wrists to the left in order to fit the mouse next to the right of the keyboard since I'm right handed. However there is a problem with this.

Keyboards today keep the number pad and special functions to the right of the keyboard and since most keep the mouse to the right, what you end up with is a wide distance between the keyboard and the mouse. In order to type "safely" you either have to position the keyboard area where you type central to you and get the mouse out of the way or place the mouse on the left side of the keyboard.

Well the question is, if most people are right handed, why isn't the number pad on the left side of the keyboard? That way you could keep the mouse on the right side while also being able to position the typing area central to yourself.

Or you could get a separate number pad but that doesn't seem to be a common/popular thing especially since most nice keyboards have the numberpad integrated.

I think putting the number pad on the left hand side can be a good idea for certain applications. Better still, have it on both sides.

I have enough space that I can fit the keyboard in the middle with the mouse on the right.

I too have enough space, the problem is, it puts the keyboard at an angle relative to my wrists. The area in which I type is small in comparison to the size of the entire keyboard, so while I have to turn in my wrists, it's more comfortable than having my left wrist straight and my right wrist at a like a 70* angle. I think this is why typing on an older machine with no mouse is easier than it is now.

For right-handed people who use the number pad, it would be quite awkward.

I don't experience these problems you talk about. :-/

I have, tons, of space on both sides. 😛 Only reason I ever tilt my keyboard one way or another is because I am sitting at an angle. 😛

Maybe I just have long arms, but I have NO problems typing comfortably and then transitioning to the mouse.

I like me a small keyboard... currently using this... the top and middle function keys are condensed space-wise so it helps a little bit - I wish the keypad were gone altogether [though I use it for gaming sometimes]. No such keyboard eh?

Motorola makes a keyboard with an integrated touchpad and no keypad..probably not quite what you're looking for, though!

Are you sure you're doing this?

I do neither. My arms are usually at obtuse angles when I am using the computer, without "slacking." When I am goofin' around, my back is more so in the seat than against the back of the chair. That's what I mean by weird angles... 😛 I'll post pictures sometime.

I put the keyboard further up and same with the mouse, I can't stand the right angle crap. That makes me really close to the monitor, and I have bad vision already! So I try to keep far away.
