So I was trying to help my moms friend repair their pc.

Its a HP pc, it didn't have any recovery discs with it, they mailed them all of what they needed.

It did not work.

So I used a XP disc that their son had, and than attempted to change the serial number(the one that came with the HP pc) afterwards.

It did not work at the Activation type screen, kept on saying invalid. so I called them up and they gave me a new Serial number, they asked for the disk with the number on the XP disc. X0- etc...

so did I just mess up their sons Serial number? I think I did, and didn't think anything of it at the time, but now I'm pretty sure I did....

well, I read the X0-xxxxxx number off the Windows XP disc(her sons xp disc) that her son had. They gave me a new SERIAL number afterwards that works. I have a fear that the OLD SERIAL NUMBER that is originally on the disc will now become invalid since they have a new one is now linked to the X0-xxxxxx on the cd..

You shouldn't have used the son's license key for a machine other than his if he still has the software installed.

Well the problem is. The HP serial number denied when I tried to use it. (with the XP HOME disc that their son had)

So I used their sons XP HOME disc with their serial number just to see if the O/S would load. Than I proceded to change it to the HP Serial again. it denied like I thought it would.

I called up tech support and they gave me a new serial number after I read of the disc number it starts with a X0-xxxxxx etc...

I now think that since I read that Disc number, that it will Override their sons Original Serial number and make it invalid since I got a new one from tech support.

I hope I'm clear.

He probably has XP Home Retail, and the key that came with the computer was an OEM key.

Sounds shady. Does the license permit this?

Install Ubuntu on their computer. If they are too stupid to let you work on their computer, they'll be too stupid to tell the difference.
