I think I just let someone go DUII...

I went to Plaid Pantry real quick for some junkfood. The early 20's guy behind me in line at cashier seemed annoyingly flirtious with the cashier and I kinda smelled alcohol near him. As I was done buying, he bought some beer, then I saw him get in his car and he was the driver. I thought of calling 911, but I chickend out. I've never called 911 and I don't know what they'd be expecting of me. Even if he's drunk and turns out to be 0.07(state limit is 0.08), I don't want to be responsible for making the call.

When you call 911 to report a drunk driver, what do you tell them and what do they ask you? Was it wrong of me to let him drive off and not report him? One guy got off without a DUII, just because I didn't call 🙁

You SMELLED alcohol, so you thought about calling the police?! What kinda sh1t is that? He coulda had 1 beer (Highly unlikely but....) Now, if he's stumbling and stuff, thats a different story. But, SMELLING like alcohol? No man, you did the right thing by letting him go.

I would have called but that is just me. I would feel better w/ it a mistake than finding out later someone had died in an accident because of his drunk driving.

Just me though. You have to do what you are comfortable with and can wake up the next morning not feeling guilty over.

edit: would have called the non emergency number as well unless he was in and out of lanes and stuff driving.

Not 911, try direct to the police station.

Are you telling me people should wait to call 911 until something happens? When someone gets behind the wheels and you're pretty sure he's drunk, I think that's a 911 material.

I noticed he was acting drunk, then I smelled alcohol. He was flirting with the cashier in that drunken way and the cashier who looked like a high school girl was clearly perplexed.

I don't think you're supposed to call 911 for those kinds of things. Dial 0 and ask the operator for your local police station. I got into a car accident once and dialed 911, they said they were going to send a tow truck etc. I called back telling them not to send the tow truck (Yeah I know, REALLY stupid of me, I learned my lesson) and they got pissed at me. They get really pissed at you if you dial 911 and it's not a life-threatening emergency.

There may even be a drunk driving hotline in OR... you might actually have to see them driving recklessly. "Just about to drive drunk" is not a crime, and if the guy displayed no overt drunk driving then the police couldn't have pulled him over. You did the right thing wrt the police... what would you have said? "I think I see a drunk driver." "Where is he?" "Just pulling out of a driveway." "How did you know he was drunk?" "Well, he smelled like alcohol..." "Was he swerving?" "I couldn't tell, he wasn't going fast enough to swerve." etc etc.

If you really wanted to do something you could have walked up and started a conversation with him. "Hey, dude, you sure you're ok to drive? You look like you could use a rest." Or something like that. A lot harder to do but a lot more effective. I wouldn't have done anything unless he was clearly stumbling around.

When u call the cops dont even wory about giving a name or anything just say id like to remain anonomus, or if they ask just say ur jerboy 🙂

last time I checked, you can be under the limit, and yet still smell like booze and flirt.

you need to get a fvcking life. especially messing with bums, thats just low man. (other thread).

I can't wait until someone beats the living sh!t out of you :|

you need to learn to get the fvck out of other peoples business. go jack off or something😛

Being any drunk is too drunk to drive in my eyes... and if I ever see a totally wasted person try to drive off, I will attempt to physically stop them... Last thing we need are more worthless human beings (oops I meant drunk drivers there.. I always get the two confused)

I know at least here in Ohio (Cleveland) you just dial 1-800-GRAB-DUI. Personally, I think you did the right thing. Unless he is all over the road, let him go.

oops, I just figured jerboy was older. yeah, if a guy with alcohol on his breath that flirts with girls worries you, stay off the road this holiday weekend. (and just about any weekend after 9).

You have obviously never had your arms broken by a drunk guy who's pissed cause someone is in his way. Come to KC sometime 😉

You should not drive if you have anything to drink. Most people think they are better than anybody else and than is why drunks get mad when a cop arrests them. I know I have seen it many times. [smelling of alcohol]I ain't drunk, I just don't know the abc's[/smelling of alcohol]

You should of at least called the police and given them his plate number. If someone had the balls to drink and drive, maybe they have the balls to have a flashlight in their face and can walk a straight line.

That and what if they hit someone and you could have stopped it. Way to many drunks on the road.

Folks remember it's perfectly legal to drink THEN drive. It's illegal to drink THEN drive while intoxicated however

I have done that before. One nite around 1 am, I heard loud music from a car outside of my apt. Look over the window and saw two guys drunk as hell. At first I decided not to call the cops because they were not driving but I knew they just drove back from the bar or something. Anyways they were there for like 30 mins and one of the guy decided to get behind the wheel. As he back up his car he hit a parked car in front of him because he thought he was in the reverse gear when he was in the forward gear. At that time there is a reason enough for me to call the cops and so I dialed 911. Told the operator my name and the situation, within two mins two cruiser were at my apt. The drunk driver were on the main road but was stopped by the second cruiser. The cops took him to detox and only after almost two day I saw him again in the same cloths he was wearing on that nite. It happened on friday nite and I saw him on sunday evening, I am glad that I called the cops. It probably cost him $750 and a three months license suspension.
