2 days into it.. I'm not so sure I want to do Computer Engineering anymore.. :(

Should I go out and switch to something else? My other plans were to go into law, criminology, or possible pre-med (could I tie it with biomedical engineering maybe?) .. No clue what to do.. :[

well, i doubt we'll be able to tell you what you love :p go out and take intro courses, and see if there's anything you're interested in. actually you could probably just sit in on them.

I basically hate all this programming stuff I gotta do.. They're teaching us Python or something, using unix.. I can't even save the damn program I write in vi.. Bleh.

Gonna see my counselor tomorrow and look into other options.

What he said.

BTW, I was in the same boat. I originally planned to do Comp E but changed my mind quickly. I've taken a few classes relating to different subjects and I've found the psych classes to be by FAR the most interesting.

Hey, it's still first/second week. You have plenty of time.

What are you taking for your breadth courses? You have until the end of the second week to drop/add, so just start taking breadth courses and see if you like them.

go into biotechnology or pharmacology (which are almost interchangeable). the field is pretty exciting, and you can make 6 figures doing something that is actually fun. (at least for me)

yea, maybe a change of major is a good idea.

if i were you though, if you want to go into law or medicine, i would major in something that is useful, even without law or medical school. you can major in something like chemical engineering and go to law school, or major in bioengineering and go to med school. that way, if law or med school doesn't work out, you still have that major to fall back on. same goes for business....

I can't drop my engineering courses after the first week.. so I need to do it this week. Seriously thinking criminology/law.. maybe psychology too.. Damn my head is messed up right now..

Eh? First week?! Thats absolutely insane, I don't think thats right. All of the UCI courses are either 2nd week or 6th week... several friends in the engineering.. still 2nd week.

Just drop your engineering courses for now and take all breadth courses. Find somethign that satisfies the breadth requirement while stillb eing something you might be interested in getting to as a major. That way you don't really fall behind...

I'd say give it a bit longer. Two days may be too early to tell.

Do not, however, make the same mistake I did. I majored in English (and loved it) only to discover too late that I do not want to teach. I wish I had put more study into geology.

If you know you're on the wrong path, then find the right one for you.

I found out interning this summer that journalism blows. Now I'm completley clueless as to what I want to do... something like forensics facinates the hell out of me and would be a blast to do for a living, but the chemistry would eat me alive.

(edit: I just started college this semester)

vi, you either love it or hate it. Don't let the tools get in the way of the code. If you don't want to use vi there are plenty of alternatives. Heck, write it in notepad and ftp the sucker if that works for you.

To be honest, I learned vi over a decade ago. I've never used it since.

Exactly! Forensics (is it related to criminolgy? If not, I meant forensics) fascinates the hell out of me too.. Maybe it's cause I'm watching too much CSI, but it sure in hell fascinates me more than computer engineering..

Do what interests you then. Just plan so that the job your major provides will pay the bills. If you have a really bad feeling about CE now, you're going to HATE yourself for choosing it after a year- let alone 4-5.

Whats wrong with journalism ?

That's what I was thinking about getting into after giving up on CS

I'm still looking at teaching, too.

1st rule of Enginnering.

DO NOT change to another engineering major if you hate your major the first few days. Those are always GENERAL ENG> POPULATION classes, so basically anything shy of architectural, civil, or Commerce engineering will be exactly the same at the beginning.

Evaluate all your NON-Eng majors and go for it.

pre med sounds like a good choice ... my wife had a gpa of 3.9+ from physics and all sorts of boreing accomplishments...lol. she now hates physics and wishes she was a doctor. her mom makes double what she does...her moms a surgeon..bling bling.
although my wife makes a lot of $$ she would rather have went to med school.
