I think I fried my processor!

I noticed my temps were getting high again. (70C 99% load) So I decided to clean my filters. (This usually drops my temp 5 to 10 degrees C. I thought while I was at it, I would lap my Thermalright AX-7 because the last time I installed it it had the imprint from the top of my Palomino 2000+ imprinted on it.

When I removed my HSF the screwdriver slipped, but there was no noticable physical damage though.
So I go on my merry way, lap the HSF reinstall, clean filters and reinstall. I powered up the system and crap... no post, no beep, no nuthin!
If I remove my RAM, the MB (Asus A7V266-E) beeps continually. Tried another video card to no avail also.

Now I am thinking that maybe I somehow fried my pally!

What do you guys think?

I don't think it would beep with a dead CPU. Did you install the HS correctly? Is it seated correctly? Fan plugged into the CPU fan header? Did the screw driver cause any noticeable damage? Cleared CMOS with the PSU unplugged?

Yup HSF installed correctly. I reinstalled it to make sure. CPU fan cannot plug into the mobo fan header (too much curent draw).
I inspected the mobo visually and could find no damage from the screwdriver slip at all.
and Yes I cleared the cmos. Heck I even removed the battery for about 30 minutes.

it should actually beep with a dead CPU. bad news, but from what you say that seems the most likely problem. You might want to check your mobo's manual to see if its beep pattern is trying to tell you something.

Is it possible you accidently put too much pressure on one corner of the CPU? AMD chips can be pretty fragile.

Well, I suppose anything is possible..... I wish my ax-7 went on as easy as the Dr Thermal I have sitting in a box. It takes a fair amount of force to get the clips attached. It seemed to go on smooth enough though. When I pulled out the processor again there was a peice of dust underneath it. I'm not sure if that may have caused the problem though.

Right now I am thinking maybe it's a good time to find a new mobo and processor. I really can't stand the amount of heat this one produced! Highest temp I have seen is 73C. It is sitting an aluminum case with 3 80mm intake fans and 3 80mm exhaust fans. Also on the HSF is a YS-Tech variable speed 80mm fan (53cfm I think) One thing I can say, though is it has always been stable as a rock.

:-/

Not saying you did, but if the mobo fan header is a 3pin header then the CPU fan connector will fit. And when you cleared CMOS the PSU was unplugged or its switch was turned off? A lot of boards won't clear otherwise.

No if the CPU is dead the video card BIOS will not initialize and you will get no video output.

Well, that depends on the board...
Anyway, this wasn't a new build. It was just a maintenance run. Nothing was changed from my last clean boot.

Thanks for your input guys. Now I think it's time to take my quest to a different thread, Cause before today is done I am gonna order a new Barton or P4 and a board. (Just gotta figure out which one)

One good thing though...at least I still have internet...got boxes in most rooms of the house. The one that crapped just happened to be mine.....

xbassman, if you're looking for a new board, those Shuttle AN35N Ultras look hard to pass up for a plain cruncher or everyday board, being around $63 shipped. That's a good price for nForce2 Ultra 400 :D

Also, I know it's the case with other Thermalrights that the heatsink can slide back & forth on the clip, so with my SK-7 I had to make sure to slide it as far away from the solid-plastic end of the CPU socket as possible, to ensure the base didn't get up onto the raised end of the socket and then not make square core contact.

With your older board possibly not having the thermal-shutdown feature, if the heatsink weren't making square contact, then the processor might indeed fry as a consequence. Anyway... it's nothin' money can't fix :D

yes it did . you cleared the CMOS. just hook a 3wire fan to the thing and humor us .
good luck
