Really not a dog fan, but they're not bad animals. IMO in almost all cases if a dog is violent, he or she was maltreated earlier in life.

Cats for life and beyond, though <3 When my girlfriend and I finally get married and move in we're going to rescue a couple of black cats from the shelter and give them forever homes :3

A dog will probably give his life for you, because dogs are built to love. I think I can put up with a little barking cos the love is unparalleled. If anything, I'd prefer more dogs.

After having both, I prefer no pets.
No barking, poop, pee, hair, stench, vet bills, walks, fights with other animals, etc.

Has Mayne ever talked to his neighbor about the barking dog? Don't really want to search through a thousand Mayne threads to find out.

Dogs are the best and there's a reason they're man's best friend. Surprised, I didn't realize the OP and many here are women.

Because people are fond of trite sayings? I have opposable thumbs and intelligence. There isn't anything a dog can provide me that isn't better done by a cat, and with less annoyance.

Dogs have simply interacted with humans MUCH longer than cats, that's the simple reason why this saying has stuck around. Cats are MUCH less of a domesticated animal/pet than dogs.

All you need to do is follow the history of man and dog and maybe you wouldn't be so ignorant.

Call me an animal, racist, transgender, i don't give a fuck.

I hate the sound of dogs barking.

For real. And I live in Portland so everyone here loves their loud, smelly animals and they take them everywhere.

I won't ever own one. I don't mind other people's dogs, but far too much maintenance for what I have time for.

cats can't be trained to bring you beer.

But one thing they can do that dogs can't do--transfer communicable diseases to humans.

I find that I dislike dog owners more than I dislike cat owners. A lot of dog owners seem to like to push their dog into your face and take them to inappropriate places and are surprised when not everyone finds their dog to be irresistible. None of this is the dogs fault, it's the owner. That being said, I have a dog, and my kids want a cat really bad. I like cats as well, but I'm not planning on having more than one fur covered animal at my house at the same time, and that space is being occupied with a Welsh Terrier right now.

This was my thought about children. Dogs are cheaper, far less maintenance, and are usually dead before they are 18 which means you don't have to be inconvenienced by them as long as you would some asshole kids. You can shock a dog with a collar to shut him up. You don't have to drive them to school everyday, have them brought home by the police, or pay for secret abortions. Plus when you order a child to bite someone it's not quite as effective. Dogs for the win.

I had a friend in college who tried to toilet train his cat. When he got to the step where he removed the litter box, the cat shit in his bed.
Well, he obviously didn't follow Mingus' guide :^D

I'm a dyed in the wool dog lover who presently has two cats. The animals I can't stand are troll posters. They shit everywhere and WILL attempt to bite you.

Barking is just a trait that young animals in the Canidae family exhibit--foxes, wolves, coyotes, etc. When you domestic animals you are often breeding for neoteny traits, or child-like traits, so essentially dogs just exhibit a lot of wolf pup behavior and barking is one of them. They were bred this way by humans. Don't hate the dogs. Hate the humans that did that to them! :D
