Was replacing the HSF w/delta screamer on it with a SVC-68 and I had trouble getting the thermaltake TT HS off. When I got it off I think I chipped the core, there were little metal shavings around it. I tried to boot it up and it powers on for like 3 seconds then shuts off. 🙁

Just have to say it. I guess your not so "Lucky" (This is an attempt at wit - see signature.....😀)

With that being said, did you clean off all the chips really good? I chipped a duron of mine a while ago and I had overheating problems. I found that a chip was still kind of connected and ended up in my thermal compound next mounting and was holding the heatsink partially off the core.
 
is the Thermaltake heatsink/fan use 3 pin power connector? and the new svc-68 using 4 pin connector? if thta's the case, maybe the mobo has a auto-shutdown feature like my mobo to protect your cpu in the event that the heatsink/fan fails..

my mobo monitors the cpu heatsink/fan thru the 3pin rpm sensing power connector on the mobo.. if you're using the power supply power connector, your mobo thinks that you dont have a heatsink/fan connected, thus shutting down to protect the cpu.. disable it and it should work..

what kind of 80mm fan are you using for the svc-68?
that is if your mobo has that feature. if not. i dunno.. did you smell any smoke?

Yeah, I think I cleaned it 'cuz I scraped the old compound off and put AS3 on. Damm those stupid thermaltakes. :| I swear to god they are the worst HS to get off.

No, the thermaltake took 2 power connectors and the SVC-68 has one of the same kind. I have it connected to the CPU fan connector. Yes, I did smell smoke but I dont know where it was coming from. I'm gonna take off the SVC and see what the core looks like.

And why would AMD replace something I broke?

i vaguely recall someone asking about warrenty info on a amd cpu they broke.. from what i remember, it was replaced.
 
I wonder if people would still go through all this if processor prices were up in the $800 - $1,000 range, like a few years ago. Prices today just amaze me ... I just saw a 32x10x40 recorder for 50 bucks, when I paid almost 300 for my 2x8 three years ago. 😕
 
If it doesen't power on, that's a good sign that it's dead....

I took the heatplate off my K6-2/300, and have been running it "Athlon style" for a long time now.

It has one corner chipped, a very, very slight chip. You can see where it gouged into the heatsink, lol.. It still runs fine, amazingly.

I'd take some pictures of it, but I don't want to risk taking the heatsink off.. and then putting it back on.. lol

Yeah, well it powers on for about 3 seconds then dies. Im still trying to trouble shoot to see if its something else, but:

1. I've taken the mobo out of the case
2. Used a different PS
3. different ram
4. disconnected everything else


SOOO...im gonna pop a duron in there and see what happens. damm that stupid HS. :|

BUT

Im thinking it may have to do with it needing an RPM sensor off the CPU fan. (does it?) I replaced the stock fan on it with the palaflo and noticed the panaflo doesnt have the extra RPM wire that the stock fan does..
