(last time I built one was a AMD k7t days lol)
Installed the os without any problems

now that im almost finish with my little htpc project I go and update
windows say it's either a copy or installed on more than one computer :(

do I need to buy another os? can I use a cod off of another computer (thats not being used)

This sucks

Sounds like you got scammed, sorry to say. If you have another key for the same os version that is not being used, then you should be able to use that one.

Yea it doesn't look good.

The best I can say, is if you have a key to another copy of XP you should be able to use that (Sometimes it is picky depending on when that particular CD was created). Other than that, looks like you are out of luck. Sorry.

you can call microsoft and turn the guy in(what you have of him) I think they sometimes work with people in similar situations, though I could be way off.

Then have you called the activation number and explained that you purchased from an individual? If you have the full package with the COA you should be in good standing. They probably show it as activated on the computer of the person you purchased it from.

Call them up and tell them you don't have it installed on any other computers.

Just assuming it is a legit copy....

You will get the Genuine error IF you clock is set wrong. Check your system time and make sure it is correct. If your time is off by more than a month, you will get a report that your system is not Genuine (from personal experience).

You say it was Brand New in a Retail Box .. .. Was the box still Sealed ? ?
What about the CD in the box ? ? Was that also still Factory Packed ? ?

If so call Microsoft ... a Legit MS CD has very small laser etched numbers / letters
around the cd hub .. MS can tell from them if the cd is Legit and or already in use

There are a lot of counterfeiting issues in Asia, and from what I have read they reproduce the packaging pretty accurately, including the shrinkwrapping and holos.

I downloaded sp2 onto my jump drive (off my laptop) and installed it on the htpc.
that worked!!

I tried the same for WMP11.
had to verify to make sure it was a legal xp before it let me install :(

Dude, you should call MS. They'll give you new key in such cases when you get scammed. It is painful and will take you 5 mins..why you want to let scammer win your money for product that has no value (illegal Windows has no value).

Also you could give us your first 5 digits of CD-Key to see ifyou really have some common pirated key.

Does Microsoft even ship retail XP products in a CD case? All mine are in those stupid trifolds (which are too darn big) with that foam hub.

Sorry to hear it was fake. :(

usually i get a really nice person on the phone and we work things out. Although, this has only been for reactivation. they may get mean when you go asking for a new cd key...

I too have also never had a problem with the folks at MS. Usually it's a quick phone call where they ask for my key, ask how many computers it's on (always say 1), and then they give a new activation code. I've installed the same copy of XP probably about 20 times now (lots of formats), and they've always helped me activate over the phone.

I remember reading some where that you would have the option to get a free copy of Windows from MS if you were sold a illegal copy. I'm guessing the option would be there after WGA/update runs, if not you could call and ask about it. After doing some reading it might be Windows XP Pro only and only through a certain date, I'm not sure but here's an article on it...
