After getting fed up with gateway computer I decided to build my own. I thought if I ever have anyone minor troubles I could always ask people here or at the FiringSquad message board. Things went bad.

I decided to put in my computer a Athlon 1100mhz cpu. I also use 128mb pc133 mushkin memory and the Microstar K7T Pro2 KT133. My hard drive is a IBM 75GXP 45gb.

As to my problems. I loaded windows 98 then windows me. (Seeing how I have the step-up version of ME.) I experienced these strange crashes at times when I did not use the computer. Usually when I just let it sit there with no screen saver. Sometimes it would freeze when I did turn on a screen saver. There freeze was like a system hang where nothing could be done. Also at other times it would give the blue screen of death out of nowhere. It had wierd numbers as the cause.

I decided this was a bad install of windows. I reformatted and did it again. Everything seemed fine. Even when I left it alone. But after 3 days it happened. I came home and the cursor was stuck. I was mad. I rebooted. When I rebooted on the black screen that come before windows logo comes it say unable to load registry. Then some other text. When I got into windows I was barraged with new hardwars found boxes. When I canceled out I was my sound was not working or my ethernet. I tryied reinstalling the drivers. No luck.

I heard this was a problem with my motherboard. Any shred of help with be grately appreciated. I am planning on taking it to a professinal tomarrow. Please anything...anything at all.

first off, you do not have to install Win98 first to install ME upgrade... just load the upgrade and be ready to pop in the win98 cd when it asks for prior os verification. I heard that ME runs better when it isn't loaded over Win98. install one thing at a time.... via drivers first (don't need the busmaster drivers, just agp and irq router.) Install direct 7 or 8 then everything else one card at a time. It doesn't sound like your motherboard is bad... sounds like driver conflicts, irq conflicts, etc... Are you overclocking the FSB? Try just loading win98 by itself and see how it acts by itself. Check irq assignments and see if there is a conflict. What are you using for cooling the Athlon 1100?

I was dual booting 98 and 2000 Pro and mine kept freezing up too, especially in 2000. Figured I didn't have it tweaked enough so did a Live Bios update - MISTAKE, DON'T DO IT!!! There are dozens of us who did this fried the bios. I still don't know what the deal is but a friend of mine who had a totolly different mb had a similar prob and he said he did something with bus mastering in the bios and it works great now? Go to MSI's website. They have an area under bios that tells what everyone of the millions of bios settings does. BUT BE CAREFULL!!!!

Are you sure you are installing the proper drivers? in the proper sequence? Do you have any conflicts in device manager? Do you check your system with a benchmark or burn in utility after your OS and hardware is installed to see if you have any glaring problems,What are your system specs(sound card? NIC?), What software do you run, Do 3d games play well, how about office applications.
