<< before i make this huge leap, pls rant and tell me why i should not take this step. or for the mac users...tell me why you guys prefer it over the pc. i need your opinions! thanks. >>

wongsoongpak: Chris, what exactly do you do on the computer? If you don't game, do you just do regular pc stuff like office and web surfing, you'll be better off getting a nice PC instead. ;) However, if you do any type of content creation or video editing, a Mac would be the way to go (and it would be worth it to go that route). ;) However, if you aren't going to use the Mac to it's full potential, why bother paying the premium? ;)

My $0.02 cents. :)

<< One more reason NOT to get a mac: SOFTWARE SELECTION SUXORS! >>

Do PC users know English?

Does it?

It's funny how many times you hear this but what exactly does it mean? I don't mind not having to choose between 10 different image editing programs, or 7 different video editing packages, most of which really aren't that good, or walls and walls of word proccesor suites?

Give me a break. I have all the selection I need. That is the silliest excuse for not getting a mac i have ever heard.

<< Fanboys? I would say that mac users are the fanboys. And just about everything about macintosh points to that. The way its marketed, they way they license, they way the cases LOOK. >>

I wholeheartedly agree with you about the appearance, and there are a great many Mac fanboys (and girls) buying them just b/c they're pretty. You and I are discussing the OS, though.

<< Nor was I being a jerk, its just the truth that hurts. :) >>

Heh...I didn't know there was a truth in something subjective like "I like this OS."

<< Comparing OSX to BSD in any form is a joke. Possibly you can compare them on the GUI end. But thats about it. >>

Again...subjective.

Everything (almost) you can get on a Mac, is available for the PC. Not true vise-versa.

<< Again...subjective. >>

It is not 100 % subjectivity. OSX is simply not as capable as a pure BSD server.
Running server software does not have much to do with subjectivity either.

If you call anyone trying to use a Mac as a server "clueless" I'd not disagree. Then again, it's not really a server OS...that's fairly out-of-spec from what it's designed for....you be equally silly...if not more... using Win9x as a server OS.
If you're making the comparison on that level, then you're right, it's pretty objective.
OTOH, if you're trying to decide between different OSes to put on your server, OS X should not even cross your mind :)

About the osx discussion, osx server is just silly. Why would you pay extra for the vector speed/ os niceness, when cehapass linux machine wil ldo the job jsut as well.

I am going to college with graphic arts minor, and im getting mac as soon as the new ones come out ( so i can get the ceahp quicksilvers :) ). Anyway for all you flamers, think of it this way. PC is like a supra (or any sports car), mac is like Formula one monopost. You can pimp out supra as much as you want, but its never gonna be as good as F1. On the othe other hand you cant/dont/wouldnt use F1 car as a daily driver.

Anyhoo if you want the cheapest mac possible, you can bild one from parts on ebay (you need pre gigabit logic board taht use almost-atx psu)

<<

<< the HD is faster >>

??? You ever opened one up? It's just your standard UDMA 66/100/133 IDE drive. They don't use SCSI as a standard anymore. You have to get that special.

One more reason NOT to get a mac: SOFTWARE SELECTION SUXORS!

Well, I don't know if you actually took the time to read my entire post or not, but I was comparing Halogen's $2,000 PC to the $2,000 Mac he posted claiming his PC was better. In this case, since I'm assuming it's not SCSI, the Mac HD is still faster since all G4s come with 7200rpm HDs as standard while Halogen's is only 5400rpm.

<< Build an Athlon box using this case. Boom you got yourself a cute bubblegum machine. It looks just like a Mac at half the price. >>

That case is pretty fugly if you ask me...I think the G4 cases are pretty sweet. Too bad I can't stick my PC into one of those cases. Not enough drive bays and I think my AMD would melt without the proper ventilation...:(

guys theres no point in trying to convince these people, they like macs cause they will match their shoes or their handbag. they dont care about, software or hardware. just let em be, its their own money, besides why should you care if some stranger spends his money on something you dont like?

LOL. I try to defend the relative virtues of the Mac when the need arises but....the Mac drones really managed to brainwash you. A) what good is a computer that's not good as a daily driver unless it's a server machine, which we all seem to agree a Mac just ain't cut out for.
B)You can get hundreds of PC machines out of the box that are more efficient and powerful than any Mac out of the box.
C)99.9% of all pimped out PCs will be better and more useful than any Mac.
D)If you make the claim that a Cray would be better than the most pimped out PC, THEN you got a case.
As a graphic art type, you'll probably take more advantage of a Mac than most people, but if you honestly believe PC:Mac::Toyota:McLaren, you're deluded....

hehe, not even 24hours yet and i get this....

anyway, as stated before, this thread is not made to be a flame war. i dont care if you like or dislike a mac, what i do care about are the reasons behind it. i have had pc's all my life, but i have decided that the ability to upgrade my comp has become more of a drawback than anything else. i spend way too much time and money upgrading my comp. i want a computer that will not tempt me to upgrade it. i spend more time upgrading my comp than i actually use it nowadays. i was actually planning on buying a laptop (ibook) which is not too expensive for a laptop. may consider the new imac as well when it comes out.
