I think an ebayer sold me a broken Gamecube

I played it for the first time yesterday and 20 minutes in it froze, giving me the error, "Game disc could not be read. For more information, read the manual" (that's a lose quote). The game I was playing is SSX 3 and I had just bought it brand new that day. By opening up the lid, and then closing it again I can make the game continue right where it left off before the freeze, but then after I do that the freezes happen about once every 2 minutes after each time I open and close the lid.

I rented a game, Rogue Squadren 3, today to test it out and it freezes in the exact same fasion.

I'm going to send the guy an email tomorrow and with any luck he'll be cool about it and let me ship it back to him for a refund...but that's unlikely since I'm sure it was broke when he sold it. If he is in fact a dick about it, do I have any other options? Can this problem be fixed for a reasonable fee?

Just a long shot but maybe the lens is just dirty...

How old is it?

You have a years warranty w/ Nintendo (though you're not the original purchaser but don't tell them that.) I've also read numerous cases where Nintendo fixed it for free even past warranty date though YMMV.

It's 6 months old according to the dude that sold it to me.

I heard that older GameCubes had problems with over heating.
The fan stops spinning or something like that.

Was new or used? I bet he know about the problem before he sold it,....

It was used. I don't think it's overheating, as I've heard that problem comes with loud noise going off when it happens. It's probably the lense either being dirty or broken. I just tried cleaning it with the cloth made for cleaning glasses but it didn't help...

Yeah but I bought this used and have no proof of purchase. I'm also not sure if it's less than a year old, although I have no way to prove its age, so that doesn't much matter...

did u provide a confirmed shipping address? if you don't, you can file a dispute with your credit card company. I am pretty sure you will have ur money back.

Well if it's disc-player related, which it sounds like it is, it was already screwed either way :)

Cleaning it with that was not the thing to do? How do you know this? The game lasted before freezing for just as long as it ever did so I'm inclined to think I didn't fvck it up anymore than it was...

Frog: you should confront the seller. Tell them that it doesn't work, and ask for a refund. If they refuse then send a complaint in to eBay.

Edit: The fact that it doesn't work is the seller's problem, not yours. You shouldn't have to do anything to try to fix it.

When I got screwed by some stupid Canuck selling me a Hockey Jersey, I paid $150 over PayPal and PayPal did sh!t about it. eBay had this Buyer Protection thing though, so I used that and they gave me what I paid for the auction minus like $10.

<3 eBay. </3 eBay deadbeats
