I taught a rude driver a lesson today

moonbogg

Lifer
By cutting that son of a bitch off. Here's how it went down. I'm on a huge, very slow and crowded freeway at 5:45 this morning, going about 20mph (the whole time) and I'm stuck behind a big rig thats going even slower. I see an opening to my left (and yes, there was a safe opening), so I get my blinker on and as I'm about to get over, the asshole to my rear left decides to say "fuck you moonbogg" and he floors it, hoping to box me in so I can't move. His speed was constant until he saw my blinker.
Before be could complete his assholery, I cut that fucker off and continued on my merry way. It was funny to watch him flash his lights and honk his horn repeatedly as if he was in a life or death situation. That bastard can go straight to hell and take everyone like him with him.

The amount of profanity in your post is considered excessive.
Dial it back a little.

I truly don't comprehend why some drivers like that guy think it's a competitive sport. Why would someone change what he's doing (= speed up) just because some other driver wants to move over? No prizes are awarded for number of cars passed on the daily commute.

On my regular route, there's a place where two highways merge. The one I'm on as I approach the merge has two lanes that reduce to one before the merge onto the other highway. Approaching that point, both lanes are doing a comfy 40mph with lots of space between cars. About 70% of the cars are in the lane that is not eliminated.

Would you think the people in the lane that IS being eliminated would just move over when there's an opening, so we all can keep cruising at 40? No. They speed up all the way to where their lane ends, so both lanes have to slow down to 5 mph or even stop completely while merging takes place. But hey, they passed some cars, so they win, I guess?

he would get to his destination 5 seconds earlier...

Today I was in the right lane behind a truck. I signaled to move left. There was a motorcyclist behind me. He also signaled and pulled left. He then waved to let me know he saw me preparing to come over and left me room to do so. My morning experience was much more enjoyable and safe than the OP's and we both lived to tell the story to our grandchildren that they too might learn to act with kindness and courtesy.

Until they start getting walked on by people trying to take advantage of their kindness. See what you people call 'kindness' I call 'weakness'. Go ahead and display that generosity. I'm going to get to where I'm going faster, which means I'm going to eat more calories because I got to the kill first, and eventually outpopulate your future kids with my kids. It's much easier to just brandish a handgun and fire a few rounds in a somewhat general direction of someone trying to be kind than take generations to weed them out of society.

Survival of the fittest people. Hasn't Darwin taught you anything?

Just another reason why I don't use a blinker unless I KNOW that no one in that lane is anywhere close behind me. It's basically screwing yourself over.

On the other hand, if people blink for me I let them in and slow down a bit to help them out instead of trying to screw them over. /shrug.

After you cut him off, you should have slammed on your brakes, faked a neck injury, and collected insurance money from him. THEN you would have really taught him a lesson.

Exactly, all of this. On my way home, people do the same during a transition. They don't merge. Instead, they SPEED UP and go all the way to the front, bypassing everyone until they hit a dead end. They then have to STOP, otherwise they will be forced to exit the freeway. Now they have to battle to have everyone let them over. They cause a massive traffic jam every day which delays countless thousands of people, all because they gave in to their selfish urge to fuck over their neighbor and move ahead.
People have a very primitive impulse to cut ahead, or screw someone over, even if the outcome is worse for themselves. Its just amazing to see it in action. No thought involved at all. These are instinctive, hasty moves intended to fuck people over which ends up fucking everyone.

What lesson did you teach him? Go faster next time so the guy changing lanes can't cut him off? Hopefully he learned the opposite lesson, but don't bet on it. People are stubborn that way, especially when it comes to driving.

If everyone drove like me none of this would be necessary. In his situation I would have let you in, and in your situation I would have just waited for the next safe opening. I feel no obligation to teach any other drivers any lessons. It doesn't make me feel better and I don't think they're really going to learn the intended lesson anyway. Just remember that the other guy really believes that he's the best driver on the road, and that every other driver around him is an idiot. He's ALWAYS going to interpret the situation in a way that supports that conclusion. It's the absolute least conducive mindset for learning anything.

Uhhh that can be reversed. If they try to merge AHEAD of the lane ending they have to tap their breaks, hope they find an opening where someone isn't being a dick and closing the gap and try to wedge themselves in.

If they wait until the very end of the merge, and the other lane allows for entry from the ending lane, it would be an easy smooth transition. The 2nd lane knows the other one is ending, so why not make space for the oncoming cars and have an easy transition?

I've been reflecting on this issue since our last thread concerning merging where lanes end. Based on the comments of one very irrate poster, I have a new outlook on it, one that will never be adopted to be sure, but still, in its purity of essence, correct. Where the right lane ends, most drivers should be in the right lane until it ends and merge at the last moment. This follows the dictum that if people can pass you on the right, you are too far left. In this idealized world, there simply wouldn't be enough drivers in the left lane to mess up the merge as the only folks over there would be there for only as long as it took to pass. Now back to reality...

99% of time the that's exactly what I do. I'm never in a hurry. I don't really care. This morning, oh fuck no. It was different. This asshole wasn't going to make me his victim, so I fucked him first. It feels good, but I wouldn't do it again. People will just shoot you for that kind of shit. Cutting someone off is a justified reason to murder in socal.

I never use a blinker, just switch lanes freely, after I look around of course.

I always lol in my head at people who use blinkers in traffic.. especially when they're trying to merge into the fast lane during a jam, where there's no exit on the left.

"Yea buddy, please merge in front of me so you can get to your destination faster and delay me." yea right
