When Arkansas has a big interstate project, they have signs up to get over three miles or more ahead of time. If you are caught trying to pass people to cut them off, one of the several police officers out there will pull you over and give you a ticket.

Exactly, all of this. On my way home, people do the same during a transition. They don't merge. Instead, they SPEED UP and go all the way to the front, bypassing everyone until they hit a dead end. They then have to STOP, otherwise they will be forced to exit the freeway. Now they have to battle to have everyone let them over. They cause a massive traffic jam every day which delays countless thousands of people, all because they gave in to their selfish urge to fuck over their neighbor and move ahead.
People have a very primitive impulse to cut ahead, or screw someone over, even if the outcome is worse for themselves. Its just amazing to see it in action. No thought involved at all. These are instinctive, hasty moves intended to fuck people over which ends up fucking everyone.

Uhhh that can be reversed. If they try to merge AHEAD of the lane ending they have to tap their breaks, hope they find an opening where someone isn't being a dick and closing the gap and try to wedge themselves in.

If they wait until the very end of the merge, and the other lane allows for entry from the ending lane, it would be an easy smooth transition. The 2nd lane knows the other one is ending, so why not make space for the oncoming cars and have an easy transition?

I've been reflecting on this issue since our last thread concerning merging where lanes end. Based on the comments of one very irrate poster, I have a new outlook on it, one that will never be adopted to be sure, but still, in its purity of essence, correct. Where the right lane ends, most drivers should be in the right lane until it ends and merge at the last moment. This follows the dictum that if people can pass you on the right, you are too far left. In this idealized world, there simply wouldn't be enough drivers in the left lane to mess up the merge as the only folks over there would be there for only as long as it took to pass. Now back to reality...

Guy, Ironwing is right. I live in Minnesota and we have a lot of "Minnesota Nice" drivers who let you in as soon as you are allowed to merge. This is so much a problem because you are looked at as selfish if you go ahead at all to merge. This causes so many bigger backups when there is construction that the DOT now puts signs out for construction to merge at the end. The DOT states zipper merging works and it prevents backups because there is only one car merging at a time not 5-10.

A couple weeks ago, a big rig ahead of me was in a merge lane and was signalling to go left (to the cener lane). Of course, no one was letting him in. I went into the center lane, then backed off on the speed to let the big rig in. I went into the leftmost lane, as I was passing the big rig, the guy waved and yelled thanks.

Not all hope is lost, yet.

You are a good man! I make it a point to let in semis whenever I can. If I piss off other people in the process, all the better.

My theory is the basic rule of the road is the bigger vehicle wins. IMHO semis always have the right of way. I've almost gotten taken out by them more than once because I wasn't extra careful.

Sat in traffic this morning just about to exit a motorway I saw this douche in a merc speeding down the side of me trying to push in when everone else had sat for 15 minutes, so i sped up and closed the safe gap I had left. He slowed down to try and get in behind me so I slowed down, this lasted for about 20 yards until he was forced to stay on the motorway as the slip road peeled away.

Best bit of it was he was then on the M6 toll road so that asshat had to pay to get into work this morning.

I hate douches.

No. The left lane folks weren't passing anyone when the speeder passed on the right. They should be in the right lane until they pull up to within a reasonable distance behind the truck, then move left to pass, then move back right. The speeder would have still been blocked at the truck by the legitimately passing law-abiders.

I welcome you to take a drive on California's I5 sometime, and see this common situation play out before judging people who pass trucks.

I've driven I-5. It is the precise situation that would benefit from having people keeping right except when passing. It is the folks parked in the left lane that screw up the traffic flow, not the trucks, not the speeders, but the idiots who see a truck a mile ahead and move left. California's stupid dual speed limit system certainly doesn't help the sitation but it comes down to people blocking up the left lane who don't need to be there that causes the majority of the backups.

I cut off a a Porshce once as I was doing a 2 shift lane shift to the right to get my exit. It's one of those complex areas near a large bridge. This bastard must have been doing 100+ mph in a 55. And he flipped me off. Then got off at my exit. Wanted to do something but didn't.

Also almost killed a motorcyclist doing the smae thing when no one was around. DId a lane shift and I had no idea that this guy was coming up on me out of no where. I looked in my rearview and there was atleast 1/2 to 1/4 mile till the next car behind me. 10 seconds later I changed lanes and almost killed this bastard. He is alive because he was doing 121 mph instead of 120.
