Jesus he's always like this...

I was talking to him about a car that I'm looking at, that has 200,000 KM on it (125,000 miles), this is basically how the conversation went:

Dad: "Thats an aweful lot of miles on the engine, its probably a piece of sh!t"

Me: "Of course it is, but that doesn't mean the car is in bad shape. Its possible the owner took good care of it"

Dad: "And what are the odds that it is in good shape?"

Me: "It doesn't matter what the odds are. Assuming things is the worst thing you can do. You can't just assume the car is a POS just cause its got high KM"

Dad: "Just leave, I don't want to put up with your nonsense and stupidity"

end of conversation...

FSCK THAT JUST PISSES ME OFF!!!

1990 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24

I know its probably in bad shape, but it just pisses me off that he thinks what I said was stupid. Like I don't know anything.

I had a 92 Camaro with about 130,000 miles on it....never had a single problem with the engine at all. It just depends on the previous owners. If they routinely kept up the car, then there shouldn't be a problem.

Your Dad is correct, it is a POS.

Cavaliers of that time (the Z24s not the ones with the tec4 engine) are pretty reliable. You see a ton of them around with over 200000 clicks that are still goin.

Stefan: I have no idea how old you are but this quote from Mark Twain seems relevant:

<< When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years. >>

In other words, give your Dad some time. ;)

Dan,

I know he knows a lot, and I try to respect what he says, but when he tells me I'm stupid because I know assuming things is a bad thing to do, it really pisses me off.

edit

btw, i'm 18. 19 in 2 1/2 months

I'm not getting down on you. I was in your position myself, years ago, and I still remember how frustrating it could be. Just realize that someday the shoe will be on the other foot. ;)

What I've found when dealing with anyone like that (i.e. my dad, my managers) I just let them go on thinking they're right and when the time comes, BAM! I shove my correctness in their face and prove them wrong about something. Muhahahaahah

But honestly, this past year I've found just letting people have their own opinions, no matter how retarded they are, makes all conversations go so smoothly.

Ya dad's just looking out for you. In all fairness, after you spend a shed load of money on it, and the thing falls apart, the last thing you want to hear is a "Told You So". Believe me, it's even worse when your dad is a mechanic!!!!!!

The odds are that your Dad's right. Of course odds don't matter to you. They will in a few years.

First thing that pop into my head when I read her post !

Stefan time is so short u will find this out 4 yourself. And when it comes time 4 u 2 b the parent u WILL remember this all.

About the car I can not tell u. But it does sound like Dad is the one shelling out the $$$. So should he not have a say ? BTW been there already a long time ago. I know it is hard waiting 4 your own set of wheels and the freedom it brings. But u r forgeting gas, repairs insurance they come with the deal.

True story I will share with you. I just had brought a new Vet (StringRay in my time.) Anyway drove the car home from the showroom. Got undress and ready for bed. (I worked nites @ the time) Went into the kitchen 2 fill a glass of water 4 nite stand. From the window I saw my sis looking @ car; getting into driver's seat etc. She came in from outside.(she was 16 1/2 was @ the time.) With puppy eyes she asked " Can I drive your car someday ? " I replied sure " How about today, keys r on the key rack have fun." She had the biggest smile on her face and called 2 of her friends. I went off to bed. Heard her drive off and fell asleep. Hours later I was awoken by a faint knock on the door. When I opened it there stood my sister with 5 of her friends (4 support). She said (almost in a whisper)" I have something 2 tell u. U r not going 2 like what u heard. I am truly sorry but I totaled your car " Her friends came to her defense right away " But it wasn't her fault" " You should have... I YELLED OUT "WELL LET ME TELL YOU SIS ! " Her friends:Q:Q:Q:Q:Q: One friend tried 2 get between us. Then in a normal voice I continue. " I can replace the fiberglass and metal get another car. That I can do. But I have only one sis and I can not replace u ! As long as u r fine things r fine with me. Now forget about the car.
As I am and going back 2 bed. As I was closing the door I heard her friends. " I wish my brother was like that" " Darn I thought he was going 2 kill u" etc etc walking down the stairs.:)

Stefan Moral of the story. U r 2 young 2 realize how much your family loves and cares 4 ya. Take some advice from some of us old farts. I wished I had @ your age. Old farts back then told me not to smoke but like u I was smarter then them. They just p*ss*d me off. @ my first chemo treatment I remembered their words. Dam those old farts were pretty smart !

Dang HawkeyeNJ, enough with the abbreviations! :p

Stefan - I know how you feel...on the other hand, I too would probably conclude that the car is a POS, get a '90's Honda instead :)

Some of you people are being real dicks! I know that teenagers can be dicks as well and think they know everything and their parents are morons but if indeed the conversation went how stefan said it did then he isn't wrong, his dad is. Its an incredibly disrespectful way to talk to your son.

Hopefully he was just having a bad day...

What I have learned in this thread:

1. Some people can't take good advice no matter what you do.
2. Mark Twain was right.
3. I DO hate net spelling.
4. I am right not to let other people drive my truck.
5. The metric system a tool of the devil.
6. Do or do not, there is no try.
7. How to change a flat tire.
8. My uncle was almost my dad, except for that whole genetic link thing.

I probably learned more, but my information faucet is leaky.

I wasnt there for the conversation but you kinda sounded a little argumentative. You probably knew what he was gonna say about the car. Maybe his comment about your nonsense was directed towards that?
Im sure he's just looking out for your bet interest. I dont know about cavaliers but with most high milage american cars youre askin' for trouble. Just do your research before you buy.:)
