Same here... should be good enough right? I check my router every so often and don't see any foreign attached devices.

so let me get this staight, if I don't have WEP activated, someone in range of my wireless network could access the files on my hard drive directly??
just your shared files, folders, and printers....
they would be stealing your bandwidth too.

MAC addresses are easily spoofed.

And a 128bit WEP connection takes 8 hours of data to crack. Wireless is inherintly insecure.

can anyone comment if WEP slows down the network when playing games?
I am trying to troubleshoot my friends High ping despite being on DSL (100 ping)
I initially thought it might be the wireless usb nic (belkin) that I got him but I do remember turning WEP on.
Peace

It can be secured though. Of course, many people are adverse to solutions that require more thinking than "Dlink or netgear." I personally like NASA's solution.

WEP will slow things down. Not sure how much it effects PINGS, but becuase all the data has to be encrypted, sent, and then decrypted, seems logical that pings would increase some.

If i remember correctly, even if SSID Broadcast is turned off, you can still obtain an IP address from a WAP that has DHCP Turned on.
It's better to turn of DHCP, Designate 5 or 6 IP addresses in a unique range like 192.168.35.86 to 92.
then set static ip addresses on each machine.
also, Use wep. i know several ATers really criticize WEP for how weak it is, but it's still better than nothing. the comparison i made in the other thread is to locking your car door, sure it's not much but it will slow down or stop the casual car thief / joy rider.
