Meh, I'm on 9.X WTF are you doing still on 7?

Really don't care as long as it works.

The old skeumorphic design was so much better. Anyone agree?

I agree with you completely - I like the older look better. But I don't like any of the Office 2013 stuff either and I generally like Windows 7 more than Windows 10. In fact, my favorite Windows UI was Windows 2000 Pro. I don't like the way the new Ubuntu looks and the new Lync 2013 that my company just foisted on me is so much more weird looking than the older one. I don't like it either.

But all that said, it sort of makes me feel old when some new look and slight UI changes comes out and I complain that I like it the way it was. Makes me feel like a curmudgeon - particularly since my teenage daughters say "I like the way iOS9 looks. It's better, cleaner". Complaining that the older look is better makes me feel old - like when I say that older bands are better than the new stuff. I don't like feeling old, so I try to just roll with it. I don't know, desura, I agree with your point, but life and style move on and now the new look is this whole flat thing... for better or worse. To me they are mostly cosmetic changes anyway, so it doesn't really matter all that much.

I'm with pm's daughters, iOS 7 and beyond look cleaner and fresher. I do kinda miss the Aqua-like theme now and then, but it feels like iOS grew up somewhat with the redesign.

On that note: on Android, I still prefer the look of the 4.x releases ever-so-slightly over Lollipop and beyond, but I'm not complaining about how it looks now.

Me too until I hit a wall with Snapchat. I refuse to join a social network that got popular because of people sending nudes.

On topic I don't really like the new iOS design (VERY kiddy, it looks like a toy OS) but I like flat designs overall (Lollipop, Windows 10, etc.). The first iOS design was a learning curve band-aid more than a visual style. When the iPhone launched no one knew how to use a touch screen with their fingers, so settings toggles that look like real buttons (as an example) were needed.

Today all that skeumorphic stuff simply wastes valuable screen real estate on our screens. We all get how touch OSes work, so a button can just be this flat touch target that is clearly outlined. It gives us a less busy looking GUI (which means less confusion for some people), and it makes it clearer where you can touch to get the job done.

iOS has way too much colors, I rather it have clean lines and flat colors (which is why I really quote like the WP UI, and Material)

iOS 6 was better because the look was more consistent and less eye-searing, but I still didn't love the design. Personally, I don't find skeumorphism to be preferable on mobile to intuitive (which it isn't always) clean and flat design. Skeumorphism is good for transitioning users over to a new and unfamiliar ecosystem because analogues can make it easier for them, but on smaller screens you want clarity and consistency. Removing drop shadows, though, didn't actually help, it made text harder to read. Glass reflections and translucency/transparency I don't really care for from either the old or new iOS design language.

By the way, does iOS still (as of 9.2) not have a way to change the theme to dark without jailbreak? Searches only turned up high contrast in accessibility. I'd also love a Twilight or f.lux type of app. I hope Google, Microsoft, and Apple start baking better night mode features into the design of their OS'.

I don't hate iOS as a whole anymore because it's usable and fast on the latest Apple hardware, but I'm not a fan of the UI/UX design. For all the credit people give Apple for being great at design, it's not the UI design that they excel at, it's the physical design and hardware (and maybe how the software interacts with the hardware at a lower level) that is harder to find fault with. iOS was never pretty (except for the brief time where it was head-to-head against Windows Mobile, which isn't saying much since it also lacked basic functionality at that point), and Mac OS hasn't been noteworthy for at least 6 years.

I keep getting iOS devices every so often (in order I've had an iPad 1, iPad Mini 3, and 6th gen iPod Touch) and play around with other people's iPhones whenever a new gen comes out, but I'm still not a fan. The hardware is really solid, though, and I like how their devices feel. Superb aluminum bodies that are worthy of imitating (and the industry has). One of these days I probably will get a current gen iPhone, jailbreak it, and be happy with it... it's really only the limited customization options that Apple gives you stock that has stopped me in the past, but researching what you can do with jailbreak has made me much more interested.

Did not know Night Shift was coming with iOS 9.3, so credit to Apple for improving iOS with that feature.

I don't know about the "flat" look. Maybe I'm just old, but Lollipop on my tablet shows the title of the window and the area to press on its shutdown screen identically without even a border on that area. It was always faster to me to at least see a border (or a "button").

So if I pick up a new in box iPad 4, will it come pre installed with the old OS?

I'd imagine it varies based on manufacturing date. I'd be shocked if you could find a NIB iPad 4 that didn't have iOS 8 on it at least, though.

It probably will, because Apple hasn't been selling that iPad for a little while. However, you can update to iOS 9 as soon as you get it.

Holy sh*t that is exciting. Easily the most excited I have been about an iOS feature in years, maybe ever.

Hey guys so I did pick up an old ios 6 ipad.

It's kind of cool as an artifact, but it is also undeniable that iOS has made tremendous progress since iOS 6 just in stability. I wish that iOS were a little more skeumorphic, but overall the iOS 7 design probably was the right move to make for the company.

Solid update, thanks for keeping us informed.
