I think my musical preferences are forever stuck in the early to mid 90's.

same here, but I never really liked Nirvana. Smashing Pumpkins were more my style. Give me production, songwriting, awesome guitars!

Hells yeah, the smashing pumpkins are by far the greatest band ever. Nirvana are great but the pumpkins still rule.

I had a music teacher once who argued that we listen to the music that we listened to when we were in high school for the rest of our lives.

I've done my best to avoid that trap. lol. always boggled my mind how my dad could be happy listening to the same tired songs from the 60's over and over and over again, shut off to everything new that came out.

don't get me wrong, I've got my fair share of 90's alt rock on my ipod too, but I've committed to letting my nieces and nephews pick the radio stations in my car when they're older :)
This is mostly because many try to live vicariously on high school even though nothing really happened there for them. When most forget and would like to reminisce these tools are welcome fodder.
Nah, the younger we are the more open we are and the bigger impression everything makes on us. Music, film, everything. That our tastes are formed early in life is biological.

That said, I agree with Loki and try to listen to a lot of varied music. I think I've done pretty well, 80s metal may always be my favorite but I like a whole lot of everything from classical to rap, jazz to modern rock. Except country, country sucks :p

I read a study that determined people generally stop listening to new music at age 25.

yeah, (to all those people who think current musics is crap) I try to listen to modern music and I just can't. What makes me laugh is that all of my favorite stuff is Zeppelin, Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, Tiesto, AiC, blah blah, and yet the stuff I like now that is modern is by Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado, and the random stuff they play on Houston Station 91.7 KTRU(Rice University Radio for the uninitiated.) I have no idea if this is a reflection of me or a reflection of how PITIFUL Rock radio is.
