I still can't believe Fox canceled 'Firefly' and put this tripe in its place

"Fastlane" 8 p.m. Fox -- Van and Deaq (Peter Facinelli, Bill Bellamy) are hot on the trail of a pair of home-invasion robbers who turn out to be lesbians. Billie (Tiffani Thiessen) has to go undercover and solve this one herself -- against a hot and dangerous Sara (Jaime Pressly). Bonus: George Hamilton has a cameo as himself.

Fox truly knows how to set some shows up to fail (Firefly, Futurama, The Family Guy) while delivering pure unadulterated crap such as this bad Miami Vice rip-off.

Did someone say LESBIANS?? I have to watch now! Even though in real life you never see two good looking carpet lickers together.

If you thought Fastlane is bad, you should have seen Man vs. Beast on Wednesday night. That was a truly awful show. Fortunately it was just a 1-time thing (I hope).

You'd have been a lot less surprised if you'd also watched Strange Luck, Profit, Action, Parker Lewis Can't Lose, The Ben Stiller Show, and/or The Tick.

Don't even get me started on how Fox killed Firefly. Showing episodes out of sequence, skipping the pilot so no one saw any of the background story or character introduction. Plus being prempted for the world series for 2 weeks.

They didn't know what to do with a well written sci-fi show so they killed it. But a flashy, sex driven, crap cop show populated by models, that gets a 2nd and 3rd chance! Even though it failed in a much better time slot already, it will get to finish its season....

Sadly with UPN and Sci Fi both passing on picking up Firefly, it looks finished. All I can hope now is for ALL the episodes to be released on DVD.

I did and I agree with all of those except The Tick. I loved the animated series but the live-action version was just 'off'. It had some hilarious moments but at the same time there was something about it that told me from the beginning that this wouldn't survive. Firefly, Futurama, and The Family Guy were the most recent examples of Fox setting a show up to fail from the beginning that I could think of.

Not to mention the advertising. I've seen ads for Fastlane everywhere. Hell, I have a billboard less than a mile from my house with those idiots on it. Firefly ads I can remember seeing - ZERO. The only way I found out about the show was through sites like ain't it cool news.

NEILSEN RATINGS

Firefly: 4.28

Fastlane: 6.96

This explains it to me. You cannot expect a geeky scifi show like that to survive in primetime.

Yep, I've got my DVR set to record Futurama, Inuyasha, and Cowboy Bebop every night on the Cartoon Network.

For Firefly to have a rating of 4.28 with the horrible treatment it received and a bad timeslot for its target audience shows how good the show was IMHO. Firefly got zero advertising as well compared to how much Fox has hyped Fastlane.

I'm curious, has anybody seen John Doe, the show which follows Fastlane? It looks somewhat interesting (at least compared to Fastlane), but I don't want to dive into something that's bad...

Not in that kiss of death Friday night timeslot. Buffy the Vampire Slayer regularly gets sub-4 Nielsen ratings and yet it's on its seventh season.

Voyager and Enterprise are in that boat as well, although without those shows, I'm not sure how much UPN there is, so that's probably not really a comparison.

John Doe is the amnesiac version of The Pretender.

Yep, and from what I understand, they are running the amnesiac part thin now.

I realize that the ratings were what lead to Firefly being cancelled. But several things led to those low ratings...

1) Fastlane had a much better timeslot than Firefly, Friday night is bad for anything with a younger audience

2) Fastlane gets more advertising and promotion (firefly barely got any around here until they cancelled it, then they had several ads for the pilot)

3) Thanks to skipping the pilot and showing episodes out of order due to fox's meddling, it was hard to figure out the background story of firefly.

Plus I don't think Firefly was as geeky as most think. It was the first scifi show my wife liked and wanted to watch with me. She loved the writting and wit. It could have had a much broader audience with better marketing...

I'm just so annoyed that any of the most stupid ideas for a reality show can get picked up, but intelligent shows are abandoned.

Joss Whedon is a comedy genius.

Sadly, intelligence nowadays costs money, but baser material is so omnipresent it's practically free. Given that so many viewers are shirking their implicit contractual responsibilities in watching commercials, networks really have no choice but to go with the low-cost reality compost.

I couldn't get in to John Doe and I watched the first 3 episodes (since I was already watching Fox). Seemed like a some what good concept, I liked the selective colorblindness. The plots just didn't grab me though. I ended up turning it off anyways...

Back on this lesbian line of thought :Q Why do I always imagine that the creative process for a show always goes something like this?

Producer - "I like your script, I really do. But, I don't know. It needs something to spruce it up. To make it more exciting...racier."

Writer - "You mean like having suspenful and tense dialouge? Maybe a spectacular stunt or chase scene? I know, how about a tragic romance or intelligent handling of a serious current event?"

Producer - "No, no, no. It has been my experience that the best way to handle a situation like this is to just add lesbians."

I never watched firefly because the ads made it look absolutely retarded, but the one time I saw fastlane it was like baywatch for cops. Thoroughly unwatchable.

jeraden Don't count on it! I'm sure we'll see more of that man vs. beast.

Part of the problem to me with john doe is it's just another damn detective show. Also the show contradicts itself. They say the guy knows everything but there is an awful freaking lot he doesn't know - and not just about himself. He uses his computer to find stuff out, asks people questions, etc. I realize the show couldn't work if he literally knew _everything_ but as it is they basically choose what he knows and what he doesn't.

We can't really throw stones here as firefly did have a (implied) lesbian scene. That did lead to one of my favorite lines: "I'll be in my bunk" Jane.

Of course that scene wasn't advertised for 6 days in advance and was written for the moral and comedic value (I think 😉)....
