so i have this mini fridge that has a freezer section which i've never really used. when i opened it up, it's just a huge bolcks of ice. being that i am moving, i wanted to get the ice out out, so i used a flat screwdriver and stabbed the ice block to death... i mean, to chip away at the ice block. now after chipping away, it seems i must have hit a tube or pipe and i heard some hissing. i believe it was the refrigerant gas leaking out. i googled to see if refrigerant gas is poisonous, and it's not (though it's not recommend that you inhale it). my question is, should i still keep the fridge? i don't think i see any danger in keeping it around in the garage to keep extra drinks cold. thoughts?

cliffnotes:
pierced a tube/pipe in mini fridge freezer
refrigerant gas leaked
is it safe to still use?

If you leaked out the refrigerant you are now the proud owner of a giant ice chest. You could tip it over, pack it full of ice and use it as a cooler for parties. Plugging it in with a refrigerant leak will probably just burn out your motor.

I hardly believe it will still chill after you have let out the coolant. Its trash.(screwdriver, seriously? no hot water or thaw?)

Sounds like a cool way to waste some electricity and someday start a fire!

Seriously?
That's like asking this: there was some dirt that became lodged under my car, so I took a pick-axe to remove it. I hit was must have been a tank or something and I heard a liquid pouring out on the ground. Smelled like gasoline. Think I can still drive my car to work tomorrow?

i couldn't pull any of the trays out becuz the whole freezer section was a frozen block of ice. thawing probably wouldn've been a good idea tho.

thanx for the info... i'll toss it.

You *might* be able to splice in a section of coil, then recharge it with refrigerant & have it functioning again for $20 or so... Depends on where the hole is & how handy you are.

It's not worth much anymore.

Take it out in your back yard with your old washer & dryer, toilets, etc and shoot at it with a shotgun.

The kind of repair also depends on how high the pressure is inside that tube, and if a dimension change will have a negative effect on performance or safety.

Do save the copper though, you might be able to get a few dollars for it.

Sure, but before you die, you'll be in heaven.

Kahless himself never saw battles such as this.

The hills were soaked in rivers of R134a! Shards of copper tubing were strewn everywhere, the only remnants of the cowardly radiators they once were.
K'plah!

Reminds me of the time my friend comes to pick me up in his parents van. The radiator or the hose completely emptied itself on the side of the road in front of my house. I offer him my phone so he can call his parents to arrange a tow truck to come get it. He looks at me and says "That's ok; I think it's fine to drive back home."

Its dead Jim !
Plug it up now and it will just stay on and overheat the compressor without ever getting a degree colder.
You could plug the hole, use a vacuum pump to get out all the air, put new refrigerant in , R134A isn't hard to get, R12 or R22 your out of luck.

Are you giving yourself or other ppl advice with that last statement? Or did a mod forget to bold/sign an edit?

I have no comment on the repair ideas, but if you ever get a fridge again which does not contain a frostless freezer then I recommend use a hair dryer on the ice. I know it sounds silly but it really does work. Once you do that for a bit, it will be much easier for you to remove the ice which might involve some light chiseling.
