I sold my wrecked car for $400

So I crashed my car and sold it to someone for $400. The funny thing was he gave me an envelop with $600 in it! Woohoo go me! But I'm more of an honest person than that. So I called him up. Conversation goes like this:

Me: Hello, this is illusion882, you just bought my car.
Buyer: Yes, Hello
Me: Well it appears you left some extra money in the envelope, an extra $200.
Buyer: That's not possible, I only withdrew $400.
Me: Umm... I am holding 6 $100 bills right now and none of them were mine before you bought my car
Buyer: Well there must be a mistake
Me: Ok... Well if you decide the money is missing give me a call
Buyer: what so you can sue me for stealing $200?

And at this point I'm thinking WTF? I mean, I have the money, no doubt about that. The bill of sale says $400, not $600. Why would he assume I am going to sue him for the ammount I am giving money back?

Me: Ok..... right. Where do we go from here?
Buyer: Well.... I think we are done.
Me: Ok.

And we hang up.

Do you think something shady is going on here? The guy was about 25 and said he was trying to get his Masters Degree (I didn't ask in what). I wonder what is going on....

Maybe these bills are magic and they reproduce inside the envelope!

EDIT: Here is how the deal went down. I put the ad online. I got a bunch of calls, not everyone was real serious but a few people were. This guy was able to go down to my car and look at it, he said he wanted to buy it. Sold. I was at work when he called. So I told him to drop off the money with my roommates and when I get back home I can have to Tow company tow the car to you. So he does that. I get home, find the envelope with the extra money. I have the tow company tow the car to him (he paid for the tow too). I called him after that and tried to explain... he thought I was ****** with him....

I think you did the right thing in contacting him and attempting to return the money. Since he doesn't appear to want it back, you can just keep the cash and be done with it. I'm guessing he went to the atm, withdrew $400, and the machine spit out $600 instead. He just grabbed it and put it in an envelope without paying close attention. Since he's "sure" he only withdrew $400, he thinks you're trying to pull some sort of fast one on him, even though I don't see how that could possibly be the case.

why do I get the feeling that on another forum somewhere some guy has started a thread saying "I think the guy who sold me my new car is trying to scam me"

Put the $200 in the pages of a book and forget they are there for now.

If he calls you up and apologizes, give them back. If not... well, the money will come in handy when you need it.

I don't see how you could come out on the losing end of this one. If he does try to take you to court, then:

Moron: "I accidentally gave him $600 for his $400 car, I want my money back."
Judge: "Is this true?"
You: "Nope."
Judge: "Settled."

Put the bills back in the envelope, and see if two more extra ones pop out.

We need pictures of said envelope to further investigate.

Edit:
Lets not take any chances on this one. Stick them back in the envelope and mail them to me. I will look them over in my lab.

tell him you will send him a money order for $1000, he can deposit $200 and give you $800 back

also, start all of your sentences with "I WILL LIKE YOU TO..."

He said he withdrew money, he never said it wasn't from a bank teller.
