I moved out of my townhouse last January because a Condo company bought out the whole complex and was converting them into condos. They offered to sell me mine for $297,000
At the time, I didn't see myself staying here for very long so I declined. I just took the $4-5000 they gave me to break my lease and moved up to Maryland.

So September rolls around and me and the wife decide we really hate Maryland (god awful state) and want to move back to virginia. We also decided we might look into buying a house because we might be here longer than expected.

I called up my old complex and asked them how much the same size townhouse is going for and now it's from the upper 3s to lower 4s. :(

I guess it's ok since at the time, I was not in a position to purchase a place with my wife unemployed.

Oh well, just had to let it out.

You don't have to tell me about house prices - looking to move into a better neighborhood and our starter home will keep us going for a while as prices have gone up a little too much in our desired locations.

Yeah, I know what you mean, if I bought stock in Microsoft back in the 80s I would be a millionaire by now...

How are high gas prices unique to Maryland. Everybody is dealing with that now and it is a recent phenomenon. I have grown up in Maryland most of my life and I like it fine here. Otherwise I'd have moved elsewhere.

Housing prices (like gas prices) are not a localized phenomenon in Maryland. Also, Maryland real-estate should hold it's value better if we face the impending real-estate slump everyone is fearing because of it's proximity to the nations capital and the proximity to the coast and shipping ports. I guess if you live in certain crappy parts of Maryland like certain parts of PG county or something, then crime is an issue but every state has its good neighborhoods and bad neighborhoods.

On this side of the river we refer to it as The Peoples Republic of Maryland. ;)

I assume you mean you are from the eastern shore? I admit, to cross the Bay Bridge you'd think you were in another state :)

Heh, sounds like California. Buddy of mine just sold his little teeny-tiny house for $300,000 in a *dump* of a neighborhood. Scary.

You must live in some horrible place.

Most of Maryland is very wealthy. Much better then all of Virginia except the northern part which borders Maryland.

For those who can afford that kinda money for a townhouse, I guess money is not an issue. But I agree, I'd never pay that much for a townhome. I guess when you are rich enough to afford that for a townhome you are buying for location more than anything else. Most of those pricey townhouses I've seen are around the areas of Maryland like Montgomery county / Bethesda which have been traditionally rich areas already anyway. Again. . probably because of those areas proximity to Washington DC, NIH, and the Bethesda Naval hospital. You have a lot of wealthy Dr., Lawyer, PhD types in those regions of the state. But drive across the Bay Bridge to the eastern shore and there are acres and acres of undeveloped rural farmland. . .You'd think you were in Idaho or someplace in the heartland of America. Very beautiful place, the eastern shore. But a lot of poverty there too. Like I said earlier, to cross the bridge you'd think you were in another state. I guess if the only part of Maryland you've ever seen is the crowded urban areas around the nations capital, then maybe you'd think Maryland sucks. Cuz I hate that part too. I live just far enough outside that mess and live close enough to work though that I don't have to deal with that mess that is the Capital Beltway traffic.

Nope I meant the Potomac although you are correct that the Eastern Shore is different from the rest of the state. My bothers and I inherited some land down on the Eastern Shore but it is about 45 miles from OC so it really does us no good.
