Two cigarettes a day?! thats too much, you should smoke once a week... tops.
Tell him/her/it if she/he/it does it again, you will be smoking inside.

So I smoke 1 or 2 cigarettes a day; helps me unwind. I always do it outside the apartment. Every time I go out for a smoke, my roommate makes a snide comment. I've told him that I'm aware that it's unhealthy, and I appreciate his concern, but I choose to smoke anyway. When that didn't work I reminded him that he has vices of his own that I don't bother him about. He's one of these chihuahua types that gets annoying quick.

Would anyone else here get severely irritated and pissed off at this type of thing? Or am I crazy?

I would say the same thing. to bad, stop smoking or you can keep killing your self.

Do not ignore him. It's a pretty disgusting, unrespectable habit.

hypocrite. The guy in your avatar is smoking.

hes probably doing it because, even though you smoke outside, you smell like an ashtray and youre smelling up the place. seriously, its easy to smell smoke on clothes even they just passed through a room someone smoked in, much less being worn by a smoker. best solution here; you should probably stop smoking

Buy yourself an old school Hugh Heffner style smoking jacket. Straight class there, son. Oh and brush your teeth after you light up.

Tell him that you are going to have to start smoking inside until your novel is finished. Then he'll be happy to only have you smoke outside.

I agree with Jeff7. I can't stand the smell of smoke, and it does hang on you a lot more than you realize. Smoking outside the apartment doesn't solve the problem entirely. Imagine if your roommate were to go take a dump twice a day and rub it all over himself and then come back into your room and sit there. That's seriously about how bad it is for people who can't stand/get sick from the smoke smell. Just letting you know 🙂

I actually stopped smoking after the super bowl.

For clarity, which is it? 😛

My answer is the same - your roommate is a little bitch. Tell him to shut his mouth before you f*ckstart his head.

I stopped at home, but sometimes I'll bum one at work. The reason I said I still smoke is because I haven't really quit. If I feel stressed or depressed on a given day I'm still liable to buy another pack, and then we're back at square one. I am generally trying to avoid it though, and like I said, I killed off my last pack during the super bowl.

I actually do have a smoking jacket, not as classy as Heff's, but a jacket that I always wear when I smoke, and then remove.

Did he know that you are a smoker when he agreed to live with you?

Shouldnt matter. He goes outside to smoke, if the other roommate doesnt like it, thats his problem.

That's bullsh!t. If a person puts 'nonsmoker' on their form and then moves in with me and decides to smoke, I'm gonna want him out. I don't care if he only smoked 10 miles away. As a roommate, I don't want to smell it, breathe it, deal with cigarette butts, wash my clothes in the same washer as a smoker, the list goes on...

Whambulance my @ss.... That's why they ask you if you smoke or not. If you do, then let the other person know so they can decide if that bothers them or not. If you put down that you don't smoke, it means you don't smoke --- inside, outside, on the roof, whatever, you don't smoke. If that's the case, you lied on your application anyway and should be evicted.

I firmly believe people should have the right to do what they want, including smoking, but only insofar as it doesn't negatively impact other people. If you smoke, live with someone who doesn't mind (or is a smoker), don't force a nonsmoker to put up with that stench.

if he wasn't a smoker and then became a smoke then he did not lie on the application. What difference does it make if they smoke outside.....i live with an outside smoker and there is no impact on my living conditions do to it. If it bothers you that much....don't have roomates. You sound like a whiney kid....Johnny keeps staring at me tell him to stop it!!!

Did you smoke before you moved in together or is this something you picked up recently? If he knew you did it then I'd think he'd get over it eventually. But if you just picked up the habit, then I'd say he has every right to keep making snide remarks.

To clarify...

I use the term roommate in the popular sense; we don't actually share a room. We live in the same apartment. There was never any question of smoking on the lease (it might have stipulated that there was no smoking inside the building).

I think that people forget that sharing an apartment means living with many inconveniences. For example, my roommate leaves for work about 15-20 minutes before me. Sometimes, he wakes up late, and jumps in the bathroom just before I wake up which screws me over. To make it worse, he frequently uses all the hot water. He also rarely washes dishes, leaving them to me. This is not a bitch fest, I just want to point out that these things are part of the deal when you split rent. I don't confront him about them because I realize that I probably do things to irritate him too. (besides the smoking)

Could you imagine if both of us made comments to each other every time our toes got stepped on? We would both be miserable all the time.

He doesn't have a right to get on you about your choice to smoke, but even if you go outside when you come back in you reek and you still smell up the apartment.
