So my boss sent out an email to our staff (5 of us) asking if anyone knew anything about Excel Macros and Visual Basic programming because a department here on campus needs some assistance.. I respond saying I have some experience and would be willing ot help out. Not more than ten minutes later and I am assigned to the task.

Thinking it would be so bad, I go talk to one of the programmers in our IT department to get details. Well it turns out I have to edit 56 unique excel macros (user recorded) and program in validation steps. I didn't think this was too bad and then he tells me they have to be done by 5:00pm Wednesday.

Good thing I don't have any classes tomorrow or Wednesday so I can put in long days.:(

Of course the nice thing is I've been with this job for about a month and a half and was promoted to Staff Computer Training which I begin in January. I was also offered a full time position starting in May.:)

This guy, John, I know told me a story about his first day on board ship. He was in the Navy. They had literally just gotten off the transpost ship and were lined up with their duffel bags and the chief after yelling at them for a twenty minutes asked if anyone knew how to type. John said he thought that this was an opportunity for an easy job so he raised his hand. Next thing he knew he was mopping the deck.

John said after that experience he never volunteered for anything else.

you all sound pretty damn lazy.
would you all rather hide and be a mindless drones?
or show your stuff, advance and become the driving force behind the
expendable drones? it is funny to hear people whining about doing their jobs
in this economy, when you should be happy that you even have a job.
you should always voluteer and strive to be the best at what you do.
unless of course you would like to remain a nameless, faceless, nothing.

You sound exceedingly self-absorbed. Get a life.

The sucker who volunteers winds up doing his work plus the work of half a dozen others who are getting paid the same amount of money he is. When layoff time comes management is going to keep all their buddies who had time to BS around the water cooler while the volunteer is laid off.

Been there, done that.
